This provincial park has rugged beauty and waterfall views not far from Toronto

Egan Chutes Provincial Park is where you can appreciate nature in all its rugged glory as you make your past a trio of rushing waterfalls.

This nature preserve is just the spot for those looking to trade in the city bustle with sounds of violently gushing cascades. You just have to be up for a three-hour drive from Toronto.

About 15 kilometres east of Bancroft off highway 28, Egan Chutes is one of Ontario's non-operating provincial parks with no signs to mark the entrance, so it can be easy to miss.

The park is home to a portion of the York River with trails on both the east and west sides of the calm waterway.

Although the hike along an old logging road on the west side isn't anything special, it does comes with a big payoff: unobstructed views of the biggest and main chute.

The water wraps around a central island before cascading into a gorge below. The furious flow of the chute is made even more clear in contrast with the serene surroundings.

It's also easy to get close to the chute since there are no fences or viewing platforms. Just be careful as the slippery rock bed makes walking near the water quite dangerous.

If you have a bit more time to explore, the east side of the river is where you can see all three chutes after about an eight-kilometre trek. There are also lookout points this way with views over the falls.

Along the way, and just past the three chutes to the end of the trail, you'll find small calm-water ponds to dip your feet and open areas where you can rest for a while.

Keep in mind, the trails are unmarked and there are no washrooms or other facilities at this park.

If you plan on visiting this summer, make sure to practice safe physical distancing and pick up after yourself to leave the area as beautiful as you found it.

In Tod’s country: a walking break around Todmorden, West Yorkshire

In the Calder valley, the industrial past blends with nature, the community runs on kindness and it’s home to England’s highest beach

I’m back in Todmorden for my fourth visit in recent years, to rewalk familiar trails and strike out on new ones. Here, the Pennine Way, Pennine Bridleway, Mary Towneley Loop and Calderdale Way are close by, as is England’s highest beach.

“Tod” is a compact town of Victorian sandstone buildings, deep in the Calder valley, with the Rochdale canal running through.

This new Toronto restaurant is themed around peace between Palestine and Israel

A new Middle Eastern restaurant in Toronto opened by both Palestinian and Jewish partners is named after a region where their peoples are known to coexist peacefully.

It's called The Haifa Room, and not only is it in a prime location at Dundas and Ossington where popular bagel spot Schmaltz used to have a location, all the partners have reputations that precede them.

The Haifa Room is the collaborative effort of Fadi Hakim (The Lakeview Restaurant), Waseem Dabdoub (The Costume House), Joseph Eastwood (Paris Paris), Mark Kupfert and Daniel Suss (both of Hello 123 as well as Kupfert and Kim), all of whom live and work in the neighbourhood.

the haifa room toronto

"It's the one region in Palestine/Israel where the two peoples are known to coexist in neighbourhoods peacefully and mostly ignore the political machinations around them," Hakim tells blogTO.

"Also, we just want to bring a true taste of home to our beloved Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood."

The concept opened July 28 solely as a takeout window serving street food like falafel and sabich sandwiches that top out at $9.50, operating Wednesday through Sunday from noon until they sell out.

You know the falafel is good because they did tastings four days a week for a month to create the perfect fritter.

"The four of us are all industry friends and we've always talked about the food we had growing up and that is what precisely brought us together on this project," says Hakim.

"Waseem Dabdoub spearheaded the idea, pointed out that the location was available, and here we are. The concept is essentially a cozy, neighbourhood spot specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine with a nod to Palestinian mountain cookery and Israeli street food."

They're planning on opening a totally renovated 28-seat indoor space with an open kitchen in late August for lunch and dinner, and keeping the takeout window open for late night.

A full menu will be designed around small sharing plates accompanied by a curated list of wine, beer and cocktails "with an emphasis on what's available in the Middle East."

"The Waltman Building, as it's known, has always been an iconic spot in Trinity Bellwoods," says Hakim.

"Beautiful, early century building with vaulted ceilings and beautiful brick inside and cast iron accents along the front. We've always been fans, so when it became available, we jumped at the chance."

Derelict corner in downtown Toronto could soon be replaced by a massive condo tower

Plans for a new condo in Toronto's Entertainment District include a heritage home that was destroyed in a 2018 fire.

Proposals for the property at 128 Peter Street date back to 2011, according to Urban Toronto. The current application to the City of Toronto for a 39-storey mixed-use building with 374 residential units, dates back to 2015. It was rejected and then revived by LPAT.

In the meantime, Carlyle Communities reportedly sold the property for $70 million to Aoyuan International in March.

The new proposal includes 357 to 359 Richmond St. W., and 122 to 128 Peter St. with ground floor commercial space and residential condominium suites on the floors above.

A fire destroyed the heritage homes at 122 and 124 Peter Street back in 2018 and at the time the city had rejected the condo proposal for the property.

The corner across from where System Soundbar used to be has long been derelict and underutilized. It's mostly seen action from an event space used for corporate activations as well as a nearby falafel joint.

The burned building at 122-124 Peter Street would be reconstructed in the new proposal.

Under the new owner, the existing buildings, 120 Peter Street (John Holdford House), 357-359 Richmond Street West (Margaret Grimmon Houses) and a reconstruction of 122-124 Peter Street (Thomas Johnston Houses), are included in the design from BDP Quadrangle.

"Each building will be conserved differently considering their current condition and proposed integration with the new development," reads the heritage impact assessment for the new designs.

The John Holdford House at 120 Peter Street will be restored to match its neighbour at 118 Peter Street, which will be done in consultation with the adjacent owner, to ensure a harmonious appearance.

The Thomas Johnston Houses at 122-124 Peter Street would be reconstructed to replicate as much as possible of the original salvaged items.

The Margaret Grimmon Houses (357-359 Richmond Street West) will be moved within the site and restored to an appearance that pre-dates the application of the stucco finish.

The previous proposal would have removed all the heritage properties from the site.

"The new design has considered the existing heritage buildings and has designed and located new massing to fully express them," the heritage impact assessment reads.

Including heritage buildings in designs seems to be a trend — another condo development in the entertainment district has plans to include The Nicholls Building at 220 King St. W. (built in 1910), the Canadian General Electric Building at 214 King St. W. (1917) and the Union Building at 212 King St. W. (1908) in a skyscraper development.

Toronto just got a luxury vegan clothing store but it's only for dogs

Vegan clothing is hotter in Toronto than ever before, but now there's a store that's selling luxury apparel and goods just for dogs.

Wag Swag opened up in Yorkville on July 7, originally an online store designed to fill a gap in the market that founder Heather Skidmore first noticed when she got her dog Ryder in 2016.

"As many dog parents do, I wanted to make sure Ryder had everything he needed for when he finally arrived home," Skidmore tells blogTO.

"As I made and used these items for Ryder, friends, family and strangers on the street started asking where I got them and how they could get one for their pup."

She noticed a gap in the market when it came to luxury dog goods: it was hard for her to find leashes, collars, harnesses and jackets that were not only high quality, but also fashionable.

So Skidmore figured, why not trying making some herself? Her goal was to create the ideal essential, but with a little bit of personality.

This is no Pet Valu, with vegan leather harnesses priced at $85 and leashes starting at $56, but all clothing is under $100. While that might still be more than some humans spend on their entire wardrobe, it's far from the most ridiculous price point when it comes to pet goods.

She also found that in buying harnesses, many of them pulled his fur or choked him, and discovered this was a common issue. Skidmore came up with Wag Swag's signature product, a well-made vegan leather harness, to address this.

"Having opened on Bloor it's been so heartwarming how many customers have taken their time to come back in just to tell me how much they love their new pieces and how much easier it's made being a dog owner," says Skidmore.

The harnesses are waterproof, odour-proof and resistant to dirt, and are engineered to sit well below the trachea to prevent damage on a dog's throat. They make not only harnesses and leashes but also collars out of vegan leather, all produced right here in Canada.

The best part is, they look super fashionable: there's a literal rainbow of colour options from lavender to lime green to fuschia to red, coral, teal, orange and pretty much any colour you care to match with.

A line of rope leashes is really pretty too if you prefer that style, and those even come in ombre and striped colour options.

Clothing includes sweaters and outerwear: think puffer jackets, onesies, raincoats and fleece coats, vests and sweaters. They've even got tie dye kits that come with dog and adult human sweaters so you and your pup can rock matching slouchy DIY looks.

Wag Swag also stocks tons of styles of bow ties and scarves so your dog can look just as sophisticated as you do no matter what the occasion, with everything from leopard, floral and plaid prints to understated wool, corduroy, polka dot and striped accessories.

"As much as people want high quality, fashionable pieces for themselves, they also want them for their furriest family member," says Skidmore. "We believe that dogs deserve the very best."
