A great hill walk to a great Pembrokeshire pub: Tafarn Sinc

A summit with views of three countries shares top billing with a 5,000-year-old trail on this stroll

Here’s something that not too many people know – Pembrokeshire, famed for its coastline, also has one of the finest viewpoints in southern Britain. Foel Cwmcerwyn, in the Preseli Hills, may be quite modest in altitude, but on a clear day it offers a superb view over three countries. Its 536-metre summit can be reached relatively easily and is the high point of this walk.

I do this walk regularly, always setting off from the delightfully named Rosebush village, which has nothing to do with roses but is probably an anglicisation of Rhos-y-bwlch, meaning a gap in the moors.

‘We were hopeless at pétanque’: readers’ favourite campsites in France

There’s never a dull moment on a French campsite, our tipsters tell us, with a huge range of fun activities topped off with lovely food and wine

If you want to fall asleep to the hypnotic rhythms of waterfalls, Camping les Cascades is for you. At the foot of the Cascades du Sautadet, an hour’s drive north of Avignon and not far from Orange, this four-star site is in a lush, verdant area of unspoilt nature. You can also splash about in the swimming pool or paddling pools with the children, or have a nice day on the Cèze river beach or walk out to the nearby villages. The stage is set: my Tour de Copenhagen was a winner

With the Tour de France heading to Denmark for the first time, I tasted the cycling and culinary pleasures of the capital – and tried out Stage 1 of the route

This is the first time I’ve actually enjoyed cycling in a city. Previously I have been a car-watcher on two wheels, a fume-breathing pothole dodger, my existence begrudged by every four-wheeled, “proper” road user. Now, just outside the Tivoli Gardens, an older lady shoots past me on a shopper-chopper with a cheery “Hihi”, which alerts me to the fact that I am on the wrong side of the bike lane. Imagine: a bike lane broad enough to allow safe overtaking. At the traffic lights there is a purpose-built leaning rail so my feet remain on the pedals; once across the junction, there is a waste bin specially angled to catch litter from cyclists.

In the light of this initiation, I am amazed that the Tour de France has never previously hit Copenhagen or Denmark, but 2022 is genuinely the first time. The lord mayor of the city, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, tells me: “For us Copenhageners, cycling is a way of life, and we are proud to be called the world’s best cycling city. I’ve been watching the Tour since I was a girl and now, like the rest of Denmark, I can’t wait to see the riders in town.” All those soigneurs, grimpeurs, rouleurs and possibly even the rare stagiaire will be swooping around these streets before heading out for two more stages in the countryside (check out James Witherell’s book Bicycle History for wonderful jargon). This July will also see a relaunch of the women’s Tour, which starts in Paris – an event that has had a fitful history since its inception in 1955, but hopefully will finally ignite the public imagination.

Paya Curry Recipe | Lamb Trotters

Paya Curry is a recipe made of lamb trotters. South India is known for its spicy twist of Non vegetarian dishes, using almost every part of the animal to cook a meal. If you are a true blue foodie, you would have either dined or heard of traditional military hotels or a food mess serving some authentic, regional dishes that one cannot find in most of the commercial restaurants. These places do not offer an ambiance, you need to be an early riser to enjoy their menu and they are great on taste plus value for money.

As a kid, I grew up in a family who loved non veg food. I've grown up watching my aunts descaling fishes, breaking down a whole chicken into curry pieces and also using those special parts (spare parts like some of us would say) - goat brains, liver chops, udder and then the once in a quarter affair would be -  trotter soup served with piping hot rice, rotis for lunch.

I have always relished the one that my mom prepares back home than the ones served in a restaurant. Since commercial Trotter soups are way too watery, they just present the whole leg that kinda isn't appetizing to my senses. So homemade one is something that I wouldn't mind eating once in a while. Since it's more hygienic, tastier and the consistency of mom's broth is just about perfect. This is, of course, her recipe.

I took the train to Graz, Austria – here’s my guide to the city

The next stop in our series marking Interrail’s 50th birthday is a cutting-edge food and design destination that has emerged from the shadow of its medieval fortress

Graz truly is a tale of two cities. The old town lies on the east bank of the River Mur under the lee of the tree-covered Schlossberg. The hill was a medieval fortress until an irate Napoleon demanded its walls be destroyed by the inhabitants; around its base, a harmonious blend of historic architecture ranging from Franciscan simplicity to Habsburgian splendour now houses a well-heeled commercial centre. Until a generation ago, the east bank’s inhabitants rarely felt the need to venture west, and those who lived on the less fancy side of the river were equally self contained, with their own market, the Lendplatz, and their own green space, the Volksgarten; the old city had its opera, but they had a vaudeville theatre, the Orpheum.

Then 20 years ago, a “friendly alien” landed on its west bank – the Kunsthaus, the modern art museum designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier – and the area around it was transformed. Today the bridges across the Mur stream with foot traffic, the most eyecatching of them the floating island built in 2003 and a testament to Graz’s identity as a design city. Evidence of the city’s reforged creativity can also be found in its shop windows, particularly in the neighbourhood around the Lendplatz where a can-do, community-minded spirit spawns innovative businesses and social enterprises. At tag werk, accessories are designed and crafted by the previously unemployed; at Bo Suppe the owner sells hot soup direct from the window of his home kitchen.

When we arrived at 9pm at our hotel in Tenerife it was closed

It was an all-inclusive promotion by Holiday Gems and we’ve been left £1,000 out of pocket

In February, we responded to a promotion by travel firm Holiday Gems for an all-inclusive package to the Bluesea Callao Garden hotel in Tenerife. We paid £850 for a week’s stay in June. On arrival at 9pm, we found the hotel closed. I rang Holiday Gems on its emergency number and was advised to find another hotel that could take us and wait for them to get in touch the following day.

We are both in our 70s and my wife has recently recovered from major surgery. We had to haul our luggage to the nearest hotel which was full, but the receptionist phoned around and found us a room in town at €104 a night. The next morning there was no word from Holiday Gems. The emergency number was closed so I emailed to say that unless we heard by midday, when we had to check out of our room, we would book it for the remaining six nights. It wasn’t until 12.30pm, when we’d paid another €537 for the week, that Holiday Gems told us we were expected at a hotel in Santiago, 16 miles away.

Share memories of a brilliant Interrail trip – you could win a holiday voucher

Tell us about experiences of European rail journeys using the now 50-year-old Interrail pass. The best tip wins £200 towards a Sawday’s stay

Interrail turned 50 this year – so it’s a perfect time to share reminiscences about European train trips you’ve made using the pass. Tell us about your best and worst experiences – you may have shared a compartment with a particularly “interesting” group of people, started a relationship, met friends for life, had extraordinary “it’s a small world” moments, or ended up in the wrong station or even country. You may just want to share details of some amazing scenery and sights you’ve witnessed.

As the climate crisis compels more of us to use rail rather than flights, it’s likely that Interrail will only gain in popularity so please tip any great route hacks you’ve discovered or brilliant accommodation and places to hang out in while you were between trains. It doesn’t matter whether your tip is about an experience last week or one 50 years ago.

‘A mirage at the top of a hill’: food, drink and adventure in Spain’s Vejer de la Frontera

This Andalucían town has centuries of stories to tell, from the Moors to the Romans. But it’s a Scotsman who has written its latest chapter, transforming a sleepy backwater into a tourist hub

Just above the horizon, wild horses gallop around a white domed building while, within petting distance, a small donkey munches on wild poppies and purple periwinkle. We are pausing to take in the view, before we cycle back after a day of hiking and swimming surrounded by forests of pine trees on the Andalucían coast.

Later that evening, the light fades to a delicious pink hue, bathing the streets as tourists pass by the pomegranate tree at the foot of the small town. They always pause at – and sometimes point upwards to – what appears to be a mirage at the top of the hill. Yet this impossibly white enclave tumbling down the hillside is not a mirage, but the town of Vejer de la Frontera, in the Spanish province of Cádiz.

A pilgrim’s (rather slow) progress on Sicily’s most recent long-distance trail

The Magna Via Francigena, from Palermo to Agrigento, became a pilgrimage in 2017 and locals are embracing the new visitors

Sola?“Si, sola.” Wherever I went, I was asked the same question: are you alone? When I replied in the affirmative, people were shocked and disapproving. Lone female travellers are still rare in Sicily’s hinterland, and those on foot are rarer still.

I was walking the Magna Via Francigena – the Great Road of the Frankish Knights – a nine-day, 116-mile coast-to-coast pilgrimage from Palermo, the Sicilian capital in the north, to Agrigento in the south. The route, which follows ancient drovers’ paths, became a pilgrimage in 2017 and is little known outside Italy. It seemed the ideal crowd-free alternative to Spain’s Camino de Santiago.

Where to run wild: UK playgrounds and skateparks to visit

From the first play street to a ‘junk playground’, there are many spaces old and new that offer kids the chance to let off steam

Just south of Romford and born out of the skating explosion of the late 1970s, Rom is a hidden haven of flowing bowls and moguls tucked behind a suburban A-road. Opened as a commercial venture in 1978, long before council-funded skateparks were widespread, the venue was designed by Adrian Rolt of G-Force, the country’s leading skatepark designers at the time.

A “shotcrete” skatepark (pressurised concrete sprayed over steel mesh), Rom was built for the freestyle form of skating popularised by leading lights like Rodney Mullen. Drawing heavily from skateboarding’s birthplace: the Essex park’s “pool” was finished with a blue mosaic lip, a nod to the back yards in southern California. Rom has been a draw for many legendary American skaters including Mullen, Tony Hawk and Lance Mountain.

Thouthe Kodel Recipe (Mangalore Southekayi Curry)

Thouthe Kodel Recipe is a very traditional Mangalorean recipe that is made from a special cucumber that is available in Karnataka. The Thouthe Kodel is supposed to have a rich red color that it gets from the dry byadgi red chillies, but you can use regular dry red chillies as well, like I did. By using the regular red chillies, the color of the curry will not be rich red. The curry also gets its full-bodied flavor from the roasted condiments like fenugreek, coriander, cumin that is ground along with garlic and coconut making the Thouthe Kodel rich, flavorful and delicious.

Hidden Spain: where to stay and what to do off the beaten track

It is the UK’s favourite holiday destination, but few British tourists explore these stunning tucked-away beaches, sleepy villages and rugged national parks
Hidden Croatia | Hidden Greece | Hidden France

A lot of us have been rather surprised to discover how much we like being in nature and all that outdoorsy stuff over the past couple of years. Of course, we all still love our city breaks – nothing like an exhilarating weekend in Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia to pep us up – but Spain is also really good for getting away from it all, whether in the mountains, an unspoiled stretch of coast or in a village you just happen to come across on a road trip. The Spanish love rural tourism and there are gorgeous small hotels and self-catering places all over the country.

A riverside walk to a great pub: the John O’Gaunt Inn, Hampshire

The limpid waters of the River Test link a stroll over chalk hills to a pub serving fine rustic roasts

Rivers are marked in blue on maps, but close up, they often disappoint, their water an opaque mud-brown. But chalk streams look like rivers in a child’s picture book, sparkling and shallow, with gravel beds and lush water weed bathed in sunlight shining through limpid water.

They owe their resemblance to a stiff G&T to permeable chalk bedrock that lets rainwater drain away without washing mud or silt into the waterways. The world has about 210 chalk streams, and 76% of them are in England, where they are compared to the rainforests or Great Barrier Reef, so rare is the habitat they offer. And like those ecological treasures, chalk streams are in crisis too – threatened mainly by water companies abstracting from them too greedily.

Grounded! What to do in an airport if your flight is delayed by one, three, six or 12 hours

Travel chaos is leaving many passengers stuck in departures for what seems like for ever. But apart from endlessly climbing the walls what can you do to keep yourself occupied and your kids from climbing the walls?

This was supposed to be a glorious summer. With Covid largely diminished, it was going to be the first year since 2019 where we would all get to pack our suitcases and jet off to warmer climes. Clearly, that hasn’t happened.

There are several factors at play here. The cost of living crisis in the UK has put foreign travel out of the reach of many; the rail strikes have made getting to the airport more difficult; a new wave of Covid has stopped people from leaving their homes and – most importantly – airports themselves are an absolute nightmare.

Disabled passengers bearing brunt of travel disruption, say charities

Campaigners say disabled people seen as an afterthought amid flight cancellations and longstanding rail problems

Disabled people are experiencing stress and degradation because of “truly appalling” service failures caused by the ongoing travel disruption, charities have said.

Airline cancellations in recent weeks and longstanding rail problems have been difficult for everyone, but campaigners say that because the transport industry treats disabled people as the lowest priority, they are bearing the brunt of the turmoil.

‘Everyone is happy’: readers’ favourite beaches in Spain

From tiny coves to breezy surfing meccas, our tipsters tell us about their best Spanish coast discoveries

Not well known among British visitors, the 7km of Isla Canela beach’s golden sands on the western tip of the Costa de la Luz are an indulgent joy. This is where the Spanish go to holiday, usually in the intense heat of July and August, but these golden sands are never crowded, and the Atlantic breeze offers a welcome respite from the Andalucían temperatures. The promenade is fringed with Spanish chiringuitos (no Irish bars nor “traditional English roasts” here), where you can pass the time sipping a cool drink or enjoying fried fish and Gambas al ajillo (prawns in garlic oil). There is even a summer cinema on the beach. Relax – it doesn’t get better than this.

10 of Europe’s best destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers this Pride season

From Madrid to Mykonos our writer picks the most queer-friendly holiday spots in Europe

It’s 2003 and my boyfriend and I are hovering nervously at a hotel reception in Woodbridge, Suffolk. We can sense the frosty contempt of the fiftysomething male at the desk when we ask for a double, not a twin room. After we check in, we’re both tetchy: I’m annoyed at how we’ve been treated, while my partner believes we should just “accept” it, that “it’s just the way it is.”

Back then, there was little you could do about such blatant prejudice – at least on a day-to-day basis. Some respite could be found trawling through the listings in Gay Times for gay-owned hotels and B&Bs. But, sadly, travel has long remained an issue for LGBTQ+ people, whether in the UK or abroad, where customs, legality and local cultural norms still need to be considered.

Karwar NKGSB Style Bharli Vangi Recipe - Brinjal Curry

Karwar NKGSB Style Bharli Vangi Recipe - Brinjal Curry is what stuffed brinjals vegetable is called in Konkani language and in Hindi it’s called Bharwa Baingan. Vangi or Brinjals are of different types like the small black ones, or the surati vangi, or white vangi or the ones I have used here i.e. Kateri Vangi. The Kateri vangi are a little big in size with a slightly purplish colour like stripes and are sweet in taste. These are generally used to make the Bharli Vangi.

Brinjals are called the King of vegetables. High on nutrients, this vegetable has many health benefits and hence must be included in one’s diet. Although many people don’t like brinjals, but if cooked differently with a delicious masala filling, they will surely love it.

With Karwar’s proximity to the sea, there is an abundance of coconuts in this area. The NKGSB cuisine of Karwar uses lot of coconuts in their cooking. This is complemented by the use of jaggery. Bharli Vangi too is a coconut based vegetable. As potatoes go very well with this vegetable, we have used a few in this recipe as well. Instead of the regular potatoes, baby potatoes too can be stuffed and used in this vegetable.

Serve Karwar NKGSB Style Bharli Vangi Recipe - Brinjal Curry along with Vali Bhaji Ambat and Steamed Rice for a weekday meal with your family.

I took the train to Düsseldorf – here’s my guide to the city

Next stop in our series marking the rail pass’s 50th birthday is a city in the heartland of industrial Germany, home to avant-garde art, electronic music and high fashion

Düsseldorf’s residents call their home “the 10-minute city”, because it rarely takes longer than that to get wherever you want to go. That’s a big claim for somewhere that boasts no fewer than 50 stadtteile (mini districts), but it’s backed up by a transit system of U-Bahns and S-Bahns that gets you around easily. And therein lies Düsseldorf’s great appeal: a small city of just over 600,000 inhabitants, with the infrastructure, the internationality and the sheer cultural heft of a much larger place. Add in the fact that more than 57% of its area is green space, and you can understand why a recent study ranked it the world’s sixth best city to live.

There’s plenty of wealth at play here, much of it being splashed along the tree-lined, canal-adjacent Königsallee, one of Germany’s most famous shopping streets. As the postwar capital of North Rhine-Westphalia (established in 1946), the most populous state of the nation, Düsseldorf became a hub for global business and finance, and the well-dressed glitterati who frequent the kilometre-long stretch of designer stores on “the Kö” have earned it a reputation for snobbishness.

EasyJet to cut more flights over summer holidays

Airline says it is reducing services after London Gatwick and Amsterdam announced caps on flights

EasyJet is cutting thousands of flights over the summer, after government orders designed to avoid further travel disruption at airports.

A local’s guide to Hamburg: concerts, cocktails and dockyard cuisine

Concert pianist Alexander Krichel reveals his pick of the best bars, vintage stores, ferry rides and sailor-sized dishes of Germany’s second largest city

If you’re into trying traditional food and are feeling very brave, you’ll want to try labskaus. Originally created to set sailors up with all the nutrition they needed, the dish does not look particularly appealing. Once you’ve got over its appearance (or simply closed your eyes), this mixture of corned beef, onions, potatoes, beetroot and eggs is actually very enjoyable. My go-to place for labskaus served with fried eggs and rollmop herrings is Oberhafen-Kantine in the new HafenCity district.
