‘The kids gaze as if it’s the Pantanal’: a cool canal break in Worcestershire

A sleek boat complete with mood lighting is the perfect vessel for the challenge of the mid-Worcestershire canal loop – covering 21 miles and 33 locks in a weekend

It was a decade ago that I first wrote about “cool canal boating”. I stayed on one of the first design-led barges, based in London’s Primrose Hill and explored east London’s canalside cafes, joking that perhaps even the dowdy canal boat-holiday company Black Prince would go all trendy.

Well, a decade on, with Hackney Wick’s canalside now as lively as Ibiza, it seems it finally has. Black Prince’s new Signature range has been upgraded, with naff orangey woodwork traded for cool grey tones, modern black radiators replacing perfunctory white, Scandi-ish furnishings and kitchen nooks reconfigured with sleek modern appliances. A new exterior paint job conjures a folksy, Gypsy caravan vibe.

A local’s guide to Lecce, Italy: baroque beauty and rural cuisine

Puglian winemaker Massimiliano Apollonio shares tips on the best cafes, museums, parks and bike rides in his beautiful southern city

Lecce is renowned for its cucina povera – it literally means “poor cuisine”, but refers to the tasty home cooking of rural families who make the most of seasonal, local produce. We are fortunate to have wonderful fresh vegetables – so dining out can be a vegetarian’s paradise – along with seafood direct from the Ionian Sea. For an honest trattoria experience, you can’t beat Alle due Corti, where Signora Rosalba cooks unforgettable dishes such as ciceri e tria’, crunchy fried tagliatelle with chickpeas, polpette di melanzane, fried aubergine balls with mint and basil, a hearty fava bean soup with chicory, and the local favourite, orecchiette con cime di rapa – pasta “ears” with turnip greens and anchovies.

A riverside walk to a famous old London pub: the Prospect of Whitby

From the green expanses of Greenwich to the ancient nooks of dockland, stories lurk around every corner of this Thames walk to a historic pub

What is the best view in London? It’s a tricky question. Perhaps it’s from the South Bank, with the gothic spires of the Houses of Parliament, a building whose beauty so nearly redeems its essential absurdity. For sunsets, it’s hard to match Frank’s Cafe in Peckham, the bar dropped on the roof of a multi-storey car park: every time I have been the sky has glowed orange, pink and violet, as bright and wild as the city beneath. To the question of what is the best view of London, there’s a clear answer: that from the hill at the top of Greenwich Park. Nowhere else captures the history, the beauty and the manic diversity of the greatest megacity of them all.

It’s a perfect spring day, sunny enough for shirtsleeves and sunglasses. I start from Blackheath, a village doing its best to hide in London. From the station, I nose up the hill towards the common, where square patches of grass are bleached yellow, remnants of some charming fete organised, presumably, by those living in the grand Georgian houses on its border. Children and dogs run wild to the horizon.

To stay cool in a hotel bed, take your own sheet and dump the duvet | Brief letters

Tips for travellers | The wonder of wool | Dental hygiene in schools | Above-average energy bills | Manx kippers

I suggest that David Bauckham (Letters, 25 May) takes a suitable sheet on his travels, in case the duvet cover in his hotel room can’t be removed and used as a sheet. I usually take a lightweight shower handset and hose to temporarily replace the fixed shower heads used in so many hotels.
Stephen Ingamells
Ilford, London

• Re David Bauckham’s letter, I invested in a wool-filled duvet earlier this year. It has kept me warm during the cold nights and I haven’t overheated on the couple of warm nights that we have had so far this year, so I am hoping that I have solved the problem.

‘Perfect for a caipirinha and sunset’: readers’ favourite beaches of Portugal

Our tipsters take to the sands, seas and restaurants of exquisite beaches from north of Porto to the island of Madeira

Every time I emerge from the dunes and see the endless expanse of sand along the winding river my heart sings. Praia da Amoreira sits on the Algarve’s wilder, western coastline, near the town of Aljezur but, unlike the region’s many glorious beaches, this is a beach with a split personality. Set up camp along the broad sandy banks of the Ribeira de Aljezur as it makes its sweeping escape into the Atlantic. An idyllic stroll westward takes you from tranquil cliffside curves out into the roaring force of the Atlantic – a surfer’s dream. But the greatest pleasure is the river itself – hop in and let the water gently carry you on a lazy river like no other.

Megaliths and hoopoes: chance encounters in untamed Brittany

A five-day walking trip along the shoreline and around the islands of Brittany’s Gulf of Morbihan reveals a fascinating blend of the familiar and the exotic

I’m in a dark corridor with four strangers. The ceiling is low, as is the temperature, and the granite walls are covered in engravings: overlapping patterns of wavy lines and psychedelic swirls, like giant notepad doodles etched in stone. We stumble slowly along the passage, peering at the carvings by torchlight. It feels a bit like being in an art gallery during a power cut – except here, the gallery in question is a 6,000-year-old burial chamber on an uninhabited island.

“This is the Cairn de Gavrinis,” says my guide, Maude, as I emerge blinking into the French afternoon. “We call it the neolithic Sistine Chapel. It’s empty now, but we think it held the most important members of local stone age society.” I’ve come to the Gulf of Morbihan, a natural harbour speckled with more than 30 green islands on Brittany’s south coast, but I’ve been beaten to it by some six millennia. The cairn’s builders, and its original occupants, were here in an era so distant that the islands here weren’t islands at all, but low hills separated by rivers.

Dervla Murphy: an appreciation of the great Irish travel writer who has died aged 90

A personal tribute to the late author, who revelled in anti-authoritarian and mischievous attitudes, and whose mantra was ‘you should never want your travelling to be easy’

The last time I saw Dervla was a few years ago, before lockdown, when she invited me for lunch at her home in Lismore, County Waterford. The meal was an agreeably liquid affair. One of Dervla’s great passions was beer. If Thesiger could cross the Empty Quarter just for a glass of water, Dervla was happy to cross Rwanda just for the pleasure of a glass of African stout.

Bottle in hand and holding court on a sofa with that familiar, determined gleam in her eye, she complained vigorously about how difficult it was to visit friends or travel with her now increasing age – although I did point out how much of her 80s had been spent roughing it in difficult areas of Palestine, which produced a final – and fine – pair of books.

Ten years of the Wales Coast Path: a walk around the Llŷn peninsula

Brilliant beaches, wildflower-strewn cliffs, pilgrim routes and sea life are among the highlights of this spectacular hike in Wales’s far north-west

Porth Neigwl beach, between the craggy headlands of Mynydd Rhiw and Mynydd Cilan at the end of north Wales’s Llŷn peninsula, is known as Hell’s Mouth, because locals once used its rough waters as a “trapping bay”, luring ships into it then murdering their crews and stealing their cargo. I feel quite safe there today, though, as I climb over grassy dunes and across the soft clifftops of boulder clay, remnants of the last ice age.

I’m walking around the peninsula on one of the lesser-known sections of the Wales Coast Path – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year – basing myself in the fishing village of Aberdaron.

A local’s guide to Jaén, Spain: sunsets and sundowners in Andalucía

Award-winning poet Begoña M Rueda reveals the best museums, bars and beauty spots in her quintessentially Andalucían home town

Jaén is one of the few cities in Spain where your tapa is included in the price of your drink – and if you want to eat well here, head to a tavern. My favourite is El Abuelo, which has amazing tapas: it is famous for delicious patatas alioli and alpargatas de tomate con bacon (toasted bread with tomato and bacon). Also good are La Manchega, founded in 1886 and the oldest bar in Jaén, Casa Gorrión, which has a mummified leg of ham dating from 1918 on display, and also La Barra and El Santo.

Attukal Soup Recipe | Paya Soup

Attukal soup or paya or goat leg soup cooked in a very traditional way through slow cooking the recipe. It is an age old recipe that I learned from my grandma. Traditionally, the paya soup is prepared in an earthenware left overnight on a firewood/coal. Cooking in a pressure cooker is only a quicker version. If done over a firewood or choola over it tastes excellent. Usually it is done when someone in the family suffers from running nose. The paya soup will be served hot in the early morning with pieces of tender goat leg.

A Dracula-themed walk to a great pub: Kilmarnock Arms, Cruden Bay

Dracula is 125 this month. This walk takes in the castle and treacherous coast that inspired Bram Stoker, and ends in the pub where he began writing the book

‘And here one day, to the sound of the sea on the Scottish shore, Count Dracula made his entry,” wrote Bram Stoker biographer Harry Ludlam.

Dracula’s creator had never been to Transylvania when he fled London for the bracing North Sea wilds of Cruden Bay in the twilight of the Victorian era. In Aberdeenshire, Stoker finally found Dracula’s world of raging sea and glowering sky – a world of fisherfolk whose pagan beliefs the railway had yet to dim. On this shipwreck-strewn coast, where the mournful cries of seals haunt the night, Count Dracula emerged undead from the granite cliffs of Slains Castle.

The Hamsun Centre in Hamarøy, northern Norway (a couple of hours by boat from Bodø), is dedicated to Norway’s most famous novelist, Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), hailed by many as the father of modern Norwegian literature. ‘I was dog-tired but exhilarated’: hiking the UK’s Coast to Coast route

A solo hike on the celebrated 192-mile route from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay brought our writer solace after the death of her mother

Lying back on the grass, I exhaled for what seemed like the first time in 18 months. I was miles away from civilisation and a world away from the long days of solo lockdown in my London flat.

Now I was alone again, but in happier circumstances. I could hear faraway sheep and feel a gentle breeze as I gazed at the Lake District countryside and sky. I was a few days into walking from Cumbria’s Irish Sea shores to the North Sea on the Coast to Coast, a network of paths created by Alfred Wainwright, and it was absolute bliss.
