Like a ski resort for bikes: downhill mountain biking in Wales

BikePark Wales offers the UK’s longest beginner trail – 5km – and a great introduction to downhill mountain biking. Our writer and her family try it out

The Vicious Valley trail starts with a terrifying half-metre drop off a wooden boardwalk. Like all the advanced runs at BikePark Wales in the Brecon Beacons national park, it begins with a qualifier, that is a tricky opening feature where you can check whether you’re good enough for the trail and, if not, bale out in favour of an easier alternative.

At the urging of my sons, who are nine and 11, Harry Lewis, one of our two guides, executes a perfect demonstration of how to ride the drop. Namely by jumping off as high as he can. The kids whoop; my husband raises an eyebrow. Then to our great relief, Harry leads us to the new Kermit trail, designed to provide an altogether less intimidating introduction to downhill mountain biking (though at 5km it’s the UK’s longest beginner trail).

The ‘Old Crones’ tackle Northumberland’s 100-mile Saint Oswald’s Way

Three older women take on a gruelling trek through the wilds of north-east England, getting lost in a forest, befriending farmers and helping fallen sheep along the way

“I walked six miles this morning” messaged BordersCrone a couple of weeks before our proposed hike, “and am absolutely knackered”. “My foot doctor said I should keep off it for five weeks,” replied BucksCrone, “but it’ll be OK in a boot.” DevonCrone’s hip hurts (that’s me) but she decided not to say anything. After all, the die was cast with the three Old Crones committed to walk the 97-mile St Oswald’s Way in Northumberland.

As a group of friends – two octogenarians plus one youngster of 78 – we keep each other motivated for our weekly Saturday parkruns, but this would be much more challenging. We hadn’t meant to get so old before tackling it: 2019 was the plan but then came lockdown. We enlisted the help of Mickledore Holidays to produce for us a not-too-strenuous itinerary and sort the accommodation. The longest day was supposed to be 11 miles, which we reckoned we’d manage. Just.

A paradise for walkers: Germany is home to more than 150 long-distance hiking trails

An impressive network of trails, nearly all accessible by public transport, makes it easy to plan your own adventure in the Bundesrepublik

The morning sun is shimmering through the forest as my wife, Melanie, and I shuffle upward along the extremely rewarding Himmelsleiter (sky ladder) hiking route near Heidelberg Castle. Verdant rolling hills frame the refurbished brownstone ruins of the palace grounds. Our increasingly laboured breathing is the rhythmic bass drum to our march, with our fully packed rucksacks making us earn each step. Moses, our pint-sized rescue pup, runs up and down the mossy stones with enviable ease.

Most are content to take in the castle sights and return to the comforts of Heidelberg’s old town city centre for a beer. Not us. There’s a cursive blue “N” we need to follow over the next few days along western Germany’s Neckar River. This is the Neckarsteig – one of Germany’s wildly impressive Fernwanderwege, or long-distance hiking trails.

‘We provide whatever is asked for’: a night at the country’s top hotels, 1988

If you need a pair of rubber gloves at the Ritz they will ask you, pink or yellow?

Observer reporters tried a night in ‘five top London hotels’ – the Ritz, Savoy, Claridge’s, the Dorchester and the Hilton – ‘as well as the Britannia Adelphi in Liverpool’ (and others). Ouch. (‘Are you being served?’ 15 May 1988.)

First up, Ritz general manager Julian Payne gave the inside story: ‘You get all sorts of requests and the mark of a good hotel is to provide whatever is asked for without sounding surprised. If a client asks for rubber gloves, you don’t ask why. You say, “No problem, pink or yellow?”’

Fantasy island: a hidden idyll on Germany’s North Sea coast

Föhr, a speck off Germany’s north coast, was the scene of idyllic childhood holidays for our author, and decades later still hold a magical charm

My first memories of Föhr lie right on the edge of certainty, the images so clouded I can’t be sure what’s real and what’s been constructed from fading photographs and old stories. This much I can say for sure: I first visited the German island in 1987 as a four-year-old, when my hair was as white as that of many of the local children, including the family friends who were hosting us. Beyond this, I recall being placed in the handle-basket of my uncle’s bike; visiting a long-forgotten Viking fort; and watching steam sashay from fresh bread that had been delivered to the windowsill of our thatched cottage.

Returning this spring, I wanted to believe that Föhr had remained largely unchanged, but as the Dreyers – still friends after decades – drove us to their village, Borgsum, we had a shock in store. The fairytale house I’d so long held in my mind had been replaced with something much newer.

A Welsh campervan adventure along the banks of the River Teifi

A watery route with plenty of fishing is among author Martin Dorey’s favourite UK wilderness road trips

Wales and I have history. It began on camping holidays in Pembrokeshire as a kid, then, as I discovered surfing, took me to sleeping in vans between waves on the Llŷn peninsula. The van made it easy to follow the surf and stay warm and dry at the same time: a safe space on wheels.

More recently I set off on another Welsh trip as part of my research for a new guidebook about offbeat campervan adventures in England and Wales. Rather than the sea, a river would be the focus this time – the Teifi, which I planned to follow from outdoorsy, hip Cardigan to the Teifi Pools, a series of high lakes in the Cambrian Mountains, at 455 metres above sea level, with fishing and canoeing stops along the way. It’s only about 70 miles from sea to source but it takes you from a tiny beach, through a stunning gorge that’s recovering from Wales’s industrial past and into one of the UK’s last wildernesses. My fishing partner Andy and I did it over three days but could have easily hung about for much longer.

A great coast walk to a great pub: the Anchor Inn, Dorset

Dramatic views, a jungly undercliff and geological wonders are the highlights of this South West Coast Path route to a brilliantly sited hostelry with great beer and food

Some walkers find coastal walks dull. Their main gripe is sameness: too blue, too green, too straight, too twee. Sometimes they say it’s not “real” enough, by which they mean they prefer the grot and slog of mud and mountains. I defy any of these people to walk from Seaton to Seatown and not admit they are, at least sometimes, completely wrong.

Here on the Devon-Dorset border drama abounds. For centuries, the constant assault of waves and wind has warped the land and kept cartographers in work. Between Seaton and Lyme Regis, a series of landslips produced a five-mile undercliff, a rocky shoulder of clefts and gullies. The largest slump, on Christmas Eve 1839, dragged down a portion of wheatfield, somehow sufficiently undamaged for harvest the following summer. Farmers tried to keep the land in use, particularly with sheep, but the uneven terrain made things impractical and, after eventual abandonment, the place went wild – truly wild.

‘Epic gigs and a grassroots vibe’: readers’ favourite music venues in UK and Europe

From a converted prison in Vilnius to a former church in Galashiels, our tipsters seek out brilliant spaces staging live sounds

If you go to a touristy flamenco venue in Granada, the performances will be good quality but the audience, made up of foreign visitors, is likely to be flat. Flamenco should be participatory, and foreign audiences watch too politely and silently. Vimaambi is an artists’ association on the edge of the Sacromonte district. The cellar-like venue hosts weekend flamenco shows featuring young talent. The walls have local art, and the bar sells homemade empanadas. Vimaambi attracts tourists, but also members of the association, performers and local residents. You are surrounded by flamenco: audience members will join in with the palmas (clapping), or get on stage. It is an experience, not a show.

Walking Pendle Hill’s new trail: the Two Toms

Honouring two giants of UK hiking, this 25-mile Lancashire route links to the Pennine Way – and finally frees the hill from its witchcraft associations

Pendle Hill can be a frustrating lump of rock. The most popular access route, from the village of Barley, barely skims its north-western edge, hitting the summit by means of a staircase. Another classic route, the zigzagging climb from Downham, doesn’t reveal the full scale and shape of the hill.

Then there are the time-worn witchcraft associations to be steered around. Far more than Bideford in Devon or Manningtree in Essex, or nearby Samlesbury, Pendle Hill is lodged in the national psyche as the backdrop to the unjust trials of 11 women in 1612 – a story that has been if not quite romanticised then spooked-up and broom-sticked into a dubious fiction over four centuries.

Vast panoramas and the gleaming Adriatic: a cycle ride in west Slovenia

This route, ending in the gorgeous port town of Piran, combines fabulous cuisine, a rich culture and rural beauty, but also a chequered history

We bump into Leon on a forested hillside overlooking the Slovenian town of Kobarid. It is the start of our bike ride and we are fiddling with saddle positions and checking tyre pressures when he shows up. “Leave the bikes there,” he says. “There’s something you should see.”

A footpath leads up through the pines into a maze of old fortifications: trenches, tunnels, gun emplacements and lookout points. “This was the first world war frontline between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians,” Leon says to me and Jan, my cycle guide. It turns out that Leon is part of an organisation that cares for the history of that war and has developed a long-distance footpath, the Walk of Peace, which links historical sites.

What would the Romans say? A brilliant new ‘art fort’ brightens up Hadrian’s Wall

A temporary structure at Housesteads Fort celebrates 1,900 years of the wall, adding a welcome flamboyance to our writer’s childhood memories

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so busy!” declares my dad as we pull into the car park of Housesteads, which sits along Hadrian’s Wall, one of the best-preserved Roman forts in Britain. He’s right: the car park is rammed and the entrance to the site is unusually crowded: tourists with backpacks sit on picnic benches eating cake from the cafe, while a dad reads aloud the noticeboards to his small children.

This buzz is, in part, probably due to it being an exceptionally sunny day during the school holidays. But there’s another factor: Housesteads has a new, temporary art installation, part of a year-long series of events celebrating 1,900 years since building on Hadrian’s Wall began in AD122, under the instruction of the emperor Hadrian.

Wish you weren’t here: the photos that show an hour in the life of ‘quiet’ tourist hotspots

Travellers trek to remote destinations in search of Instagram-worthy photos. But at what cost? Photographer Natacha de Mahieu visualises the impact of overtourism

Natacha de Mahieu arrived at the edge of Obersee, a remote lake surrounded by lush green mountains and dramatic waterfalls in a south-east corner of Germany, in August 2021. It was chilly; rain pelted down. “It was not so fun to be there. It was so cold and everything was wet,” De Mahieu, 26, says from her home in Brussels, laughing.

Tourists came and took portraits of themselves against the view. De Mahieu noticed that, as soon as someone stepped in front of the camera, they would shed their layers in defiance of the cold to convey the image of a blissful summer. In front of the camera: T-shirts, floaty dresses. Behind it: swathes of padded jackets. It was Instagram versus reality.

A local’s guide to Bilbao, Spain: home of the Guggenheim – and so much more

Gaizka Zuazo, director of the city’s school of design, knows where to find the best steaks, late-night bars and post-industrial cool

Bilbao is probably not the ideal city for vegetarians as we do eat an awful lot of meat, especially the famous chuletón or T-bone steak. The meat is dry-cured for 40-60 days and then served with your own mini-barbecue on the table, so you can cook it to your taste. For an particularly good chuletón, go to Sugarra in the old city. Those who prefer fish should head for La Lonja de Olabeaga on the banks of the Nervión River.

In North India, Biryani is traditionally associated with the Mughlai cuisine of Delhi and in South India, it is traditionally associated with the Hyderabadi cuisine. There are two ways to make Biryani, Kaccha(Raw) and Pakki(cooked). In Kacchi Biryani, the meat is marinated and cooked along with half cooked rice, while in Pakki Biryani, meat is first cooked along with spices and then the rice is cooked separately. Then they are combined into layers and steamed for some time. In this recipe we will be preparing Pakki Mutton Biryani.

‘It’s all up, up, up’: sweat, tears and very low gears while cycling Italy’s stunning Maratona dles Dolomites

If you can catch your breath, the Maratona in Italy’s Dolomites is the world’s most beautiful bike race

Don’t forget to look up,” says Miguel “Big Mig” Indurain, the great Spanish cycling campeón, to the massed ranks of nervously fidgeting riders. We all laugh because how could anyone forget to notice the stunning sweep of the Dolomites unfurling above the forested valley behind him. But we know he’s right. Because for the next eight hours or so, most of us will be lost in a world of self-inflicted torment as we pedal agonisingly up vertiginous hills, only to plummet with our hearts in our mouths down the other side, before doing it again, and again… We are in Italy’s picturesque South Tyrol to take part in the glorious Maratona dles Dolomites – Enel. It’s one of the hardest – and almost certainly the most scenic – one-day bike races in the world.

Mountains and bicycles aren’t natural bedfellows. Defying the thigh-burning power of gravity tends to spoil what could be a blissful union. But the annual Maratona manages to celebrate the jaw-dropping beauty of this brutal landscape by sending 8,000 Lycra-clad riders up and down seven of its most famous peaks. And, despite the fact that almost every single one of us will spend the day cursing the absurdity of cycling uphill, none of us would have it any other way. The spellbinding physical beauty of the Dolomites will take your breath away in more ways than you could imagine.

This summer the country’s tourist board launched a new Green Wellness cycling route. A looping cycle trail of nearly 200 miles linking natural spas, it starts in Ljubljana and heads north towards the Austrian border and then south-west towards Croatia, winding through mountains, plains and vineyards. There’s a castle on an island, a beer fountain and miles of wild flowers. The first leg ends in medieval Kamnik, a red-roofed town of castles and monasteries with a view of the mountains, Slovenia’s biggest arboretum (sporting 2m tulips in April) and the Terme Snovik spa in the forested Tuhinj valley.

‘In a single walk you can see an acropolis, falcons and eagles’: hiking Greece’s ancient island paths

On the islands of Sifnos and Kythera, the revival of ancient walking routes offers low-impact tourism that is a lifeline for rural communities

Beauty is all around us on the bright April morning my daughter and I climb a path marked as a donkey trail on our map of the Cycladic island of Sifnos. Butterflies flit over terraced meadows brimming with wild lupins, red poppies, and soft, green grasses. A whitewashed chapel is luminous against the blue sky. Over on a hilltop stand the silver canopy of an olive grove and the remains of a stone windmill, spokes and sails long absent. We approach the edge of a rocky outcrop and a mosaic of blues emerges beneath us: it’s the Myrtoan Sea and it stretches, glittering, in three directions, as if to the earth’s very ends.

Our trail is well marked. Still, we hesitate when we see that it crosses a farmer’s field and, along with it, the herd of cows that he’s shepherding toward a stone outbuilding. “Come on,” he shouts to us in Greek, smiling as he encourages us to follow the footpath across his land. He greets us warmly, asks if we’re having a good walk, then carries on with his work.

There are up to 78 sculptures on display in each location and more than 750 artists have been involved in designing and decorating the brightly coloured beasts.
