More drama than Broadchurch: a car-free trip around West Bay, Dorset

This area’s cliffs and beach were a focus for the TV show filmed here but there’s also nature, history and wildlife to savour on a bus-friendly break

Anyone who has watched ITV’s crime drama Broadchurch has an idea of what Dorset’s Jurassic Coast looks like: sunset-golden beaches under honeyed sandstone cliffs. But, beyond the sandy selfies and caravan sites, there are hidden walks on sunken paths between banks of hart’s-tongue ferns. There are wading birds and wild swans on the shores of a long pebbly lagoon, spectacular paths and bus rides over sea-view hills, and seriously good cafes.

Vaccine Hunters Canada is abandoning Twitter and turning into something new

After many months of doing what some have said is a better job than the government in helping Canadians find where and how they can get vaccinated against COVID-19, Vaccine Hunters Canada is making some big changes.

Over the course of the nation's oftentimes frustrating immunization rollout, the volunteer-run organization disseminated valuable details about clinic locations, times, eligibility and more bette than the federal, provincial or municipal governments did, amassing hundreds of thousands of social media followers in the process.

The info was shared most widely via the group's Twitter and other social media accounts, which, it has been announced, will not provide any more updates after today, Aug. 31.

"With vaccines more widely available across the nation, Vaccine Hunters Canada has pivoted away from posting daily on social media channels and toward a 'self-serve' model of finding vaccines," Vaccine Hunters has now added to their website, which they are directing residents to use instead.

Services will now be automated and consolidated into a new multi-lingual tool from the team called Find Your Immunization (FYI), which it says "facilitates and simplifies the process of booking a vaccine" while requiring less work from hundreds of volunteers.

"We've been listening, learning, watching, and understanding the needs of the country. Our team developed FYI in order to simplify the vaccine booking process. It is our way of saying thank you and to make sure Canadians are well taken care of," Vaccine Hunters founder Andrew Young said in a statement on the pivot earlier this month.

While fewer and fewer residents have a need for the updates — we are definitely well past the Hunger Games-esque height of vaccine demand that we saw earlier in the year — people will surely miss the regular posts from the very helpful resource, which proved so useful that the City of Toronto at one point partnered up with the group.

"The volunteer initiative has become a popular means for people to find out about available vaccine appointments," the City said at the time.

"This is a huge, all-hands-on-deck effort and Vaccine Hunters Canada have really stepped up to help people get vaccinated and navigate the different registration systems."

Toronto NHL mascot ranked best in league and nobody is convinced

Out of the 30 current NHL teams with mascots (the New York Rangers have no mascot and the Seattle Kraken have yet to suit up for their inaugural season), fans have — for some inexplicable reason — voted the Toronto Maple Leafs' Carlton the Bear as the most popular in the league.

Soak that in for a second. The crowd favourite is a polar bear in a Leafs jersey, named after a street the team played on for the bulk of its existence. Creative, right?

Well, it was enough for the majority of 2,000 NHL fans surveyed across the continent by Play Canada. Respondents were asked to rank each mascot on a scale of 1-5, giving us the head-scratching rankings we see today. Even for a Leafs fan, Carlton coming out on top of all possible competition is a surprise.

nhl mascot rankings

NHL mascot rankings. Chart via playcanada.com.

Carlton's average score of 3.81 made him the most popular of the bunch and the only Canadian mascot to crack the top 10.

The survey results are probably a better indicator of a team's fanbase than a mascot's actual popularity because some of these rankings don't make much sense, at least from the perspective of mascot imagery and history.

Near the bottom of the Canadian rankings, the Vancouver Canucks' Fin the Whale — arguably a much better fit of a mascot for the city it represents — sat at 26th place.

The second-least popular Canadian mascot was the Canadiens' Youppie, way down the list at 27. Not to defend the Habs, but Montreal has the only mascot to span two professional sports leagues, with the incredible distinction of being the only mascot ever to be ejected from an MLB game during his tenure with the now-defunct Expos. It might be a bit of a tangent but watch the clip.

Philadelphia has the rage and penalty minutes of a brutish Flyers franchise history anthropomorphized into a wild-eyed muppet. Gritty ranked at 21st place, though he will always rank first place in mascot-related memes.

The least popular mascot in the entire league was Stinger of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who would probably work out better as a Dollarama mascot.

In all fairness to Carlton, he's always been a massive hit with kids, and the survey respondents' average age of 37 shows he might be just tapping into a wider audience.

Here is the latest update on Ontario's vaccine passport

Getting definitive information about what the plan is as far as a vaccine passport in Ontario has been like pulling teeth, with Premier Doug Ford appearing to shift his stance on the topic in recent days after stating last month that the province would definitely not be joining other provinces in adopting some sort of proof of vaccination system.

The rumoured change of heart comes after weeks of politicians, local businesses, health officials and more — including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and all of the respective medical officers of health of each public health region — imploring Ford's team to do so.

The regional top doctors in the province vowed to take things into their own hands and "explore what could be done locally on a vaccine certificate program absent of a provincial solution," Dr. Lawrence Loh of Peel Region said last week, no doubt prompting Ford to finally take action on the matter.

Inside sources confirmed to multiple news outlets on Friday that some type of vaccine certificate system to be used in settings like restaurants, movie theatres and major events was on the way, allegedly to be formally publicized on Tuesday.

But, the announcement was delayed after a cabinet meeting in which Ford expressed disapproval of and asked for changes to the proposed program, according to CityNews, and Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore cancelled his weekly COVID-19 press briefing as a result.

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca then provided some unconfirmed details to the outlet, saying that there was talk of a phased approach that would not be fully rolled out until November.

"That's concerning to me because there is an urgent need to get it out and get it deployed and make sure it is right," he said on Breakfast Television today.

"There is such a broad consensus of support across Ontario for this, we need to move quicky."

While Ford stated that he feared a vaccine passport would create a sort of "split society," the idea is to prevent further lockdowns by limiting patrons in certain settings and circumstances to only those who have been fully vaccinated, rather than completely shutting a business or sector down.

As residents await a coherent update from the province, there are the receipts of COVID-19 inoculation that the Ministry of Health digitally and/or physically issued patients at the time of their shots, as well as the future federal proof of vaccination tool and the existing ArriveCAN app.

Many businesses have also already implemented their own policies, and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce has issued a guide to help them do so.

Here's what really went down at the Yorkdale shooting in Toronto

Shoppers who spent the afternoon at Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Sunday found themselves in a frightening swirl of chaos when gun shots rang out around 4 p.m., and Toronto Police have been doing everything in their power to get to the bottom of what happened ever since.

Police initially said a Toronto man had been arrested at the scene in a news release issued Monday, and Supt. Steven Watts provided yet another update on further arrests and the alleged source of the violence Tuesday.

Watts said police have arrested and charged two more suspects—a  22-year-old man from Toronto and a 29 year-old woman from Toronto— and he confirmed that the incident is believed to be gang-related.

Police believe two groups of individuals were involved in an altercation and that shots were exchanged between both groups, but the suspects arrested Monday are believed to have initiated the exchange of gunfire with three other suspects—including the 25-year-old man arrested at the time of the incident.

Watts said police will continue to search for the remaining two suspects who are believed to have participated in the initiation of the gun violence.

In total, police believe seven rounds were fired during the altercation.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Watts called the incident "100 per cent callous" and "100 per cent unwarranted."

Here's how to avoid the chaos of the impending Gardiner ramp closure in Toronto

One of the first phases of the years-long Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Plan is set to begin tonight, and it'll see drivers permanently lose access to the busy Logan Avenue ramps as of 9 p.m.

The ramps are set to be demolished, supporting Gardiner realignment work and allowing the Lake Shore bridge over the Don River to be widened and lengthened.

After the bridge has been reengineered, the city says the new space will accommodate bike lanes, pedestrian paths and a new linear park, as well as allow for the re-design and naturalization of the Don River, "which will be a critical element for future flood protection."

But the closure will also likely cause an unfortunate headache for drivers who routinely use the Logan ramps, which is why Waterfront Toronto has outlined and mapped out a number of alternate routes for those hoping to avoid the impending chaos.

Motorists who need to get on the expressway from the east end, for example, should go west on Lake Shore, continue on Lake Shore until the Jarvis on-ramp and then take the Jarvis on-ramp onto the Gardiner, according to Waterfront TO.

Conversely, drivers looking to get to the east end from the Gardiner should take exit 155 for Jarvis St., continue straight onto Lake Shore Blvd. and take Lake Shore to the east end.

Drivers looking to get on the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) from the east end will find their route unchanged on weekdays. These motorists can go west on Lake Shore and turn right on to Don Roadway/the DVP, or they can get access via the Queen St. on-ramp.

The Don Roadway between Lake Shore and Villiers St. will also be closed, so motorists trying to get on the DVP from Port Lands should go east on Villiers, turn right on Saulter, turn left on Commissioners, turn left on Carlaw, turn left on Lake Shore and turn right onto the DVP.

Alternately, drivers can also take Cherry St. northbound, turn right on Eastern Ave. and take the Eastern Ave. ramp to the DVP.

On weekdays, the routes to and from downtown will not be impacted by the removal of the Gardiner ramps, so drivers can continue to use Lake Shore or other routes such as Eastern Ave.

On weekends in September and October 2021, however, Lake Shore Blvd. East will be closed between Cherry St. and Carlaw Ave. Drivers can find detours for this closure, as well as additional info about the upcoming construction, on Waterfront Toronto's Twitter page.

The benchmark price for a new Toronto condo just surpassed $1 million

If you've always longed to buy a new home that nobody has ever lived in, Toronto might not be the best place to put down roots at the moment — not even in from way up in the sky, where your roots literally have no land beneath them to grow.

Building a brand new house has never exactly been cheap, especially not in the exorbitantly overpriced City of Toronto, but prefabricated condos have traditionally been a reasonably affordable alternative for young buyers entering the market.

Such is no longer typically the case, according to the GTA's Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD), which on Tuesday released its new home sale and price figures from July of 2021.

BILD, which represents more than 1,300 land development and home building companies in the Greater Toronto Area, reports that new home prices "reached record highs" last month amid falling inventory levels.

For newly-built single-family homes in particular, the benchmark price (defined by realtors as the price of a typical home in an area) reached an average of $1,517,841 — a flabbergasting hike of 28.4 per cent over the same time last year.

This category includes not only detached homes, but linked and semi-detached houses and townhouses.

New condominium apartments, meanwhile, posted a benchmark price of $1,091,648 in July, according to BILD, representing an increase of 9.8 per cent since July of 2020.

Remaining inventory, which includes units in preconstruction projects, in projects currently under construction, and in completed buildings, dropped on a month-over-month basis, leaving some 9,483 condo units available and just 1,598 houses across the entire region.

This (and the whole exploding price thing) may in part explain why overall sales fell last month — new single-family home sales were down 14 percent from the 10-year average and new condo sales fell 11 per cent, according to the home market intelligence specialists at Altus Group, which provides data to BILD.

"Low inventory levels for both condominium apartments and single-family homes are a persistent problem in the GTA that exerts upward pressure on prices," said BILD President and CEO Dave Wilkes when releasing the July figures this morning.

"We are encouraged to see that the issues of housing supply and affordability are prominent in the lead-up to the federal election — as they must be in elections at every level if we are to build the housing people in our region need, at prices they can afford. What we need is an alignment of federal, provincial and municipal housing policy on market-rate housing."

Toronto reporter's dog interrupts weather forecast looking for treats

Viewers who tuned in to Global Toronto's Friday afternoon forecast last week may have been expecting to see any old weather update, but audiences were instead greeted by Storm the Weather Dog searching for treats on their screens.

Weather reporter Anthony Farnell was explaining Toronto's weekend weather forecast on Aug. 27 when the adorable Goldendoodle strolled on camera, delighting viewers who got to watch the pup scavenge for food while his owner continued the update effortlessly.

Global posted a video of the segment online Monday, and it's already garnered more than 16,000 views.

"Last Friday, a hungry-for-treats Storm invaded the set in the middle of Anthony's weather report, demanding treats even as Farnell was explaining to Ontarians what weather they would be facing that weekend, and discussed the dangers posed by Hurricane Ida further south," reads the video description.

"Both consumate professionals, Anthony finished his segment without a hitch while Storm sated his hunger (and mugged a bit for the camera)... all in a day's work!"

But while some audience members were pleasantly surprised to see Storm's appearance, long-time Global Toronto viewers know this is far from the dog's debut.

Farnell has been bringing his pup to work for roughly a decade, allowing the well-trained canine to roam around off-leash in the studio and wander on camera during his segments.

According a Canadian Dogs article from 2018, the network made Storm a regular feature on Farnell's weather update after a clip of the pup went viral in 2012.

They even launched a "dog walking forecast" in 2017, according to Canadian Dogs, in which Farnell — with Storm's help — announces the best times for viewers to take their furry friends for a walk.

And if the comments on the video of Storm's latest performance are any indication, these weather segments have put smiles on the faces of countless Toronto residents over the years.

"TV news broadcasts everywhere should be required to have random dog cameos," wrote one person in response to the video.

"So welcome and needed in these days," wrote another.

"So cute," wrote yet another viewer. "Very entertaining."

Drake's crew spotted giving out Certified Lover Boy shirts in Toronto

If you were out and about on all the right streets in Toronto last night, you may have been one of the lucky few who got some free Drake swag from the man himself — er, kind of.

In the lead-up to the release of his highly-anticipated forthcoming studio album Certified Lover Boy, the city's favourite export decided to treat unsuspecting passersby to some exclusive branded merch, hand-delivered by crew members OVO Mark and Drw Ferguson from what appeared to be a Mercedes G-Wagon convertible.

Though recipients didn't get to meet Drake in the flesh, the rapper did hop on Mark's nearly hour-long Instagram Live where he chatted through the phone with a few excited fans from his own vehicle.

Based on the footage, the boys came straight from Drake's Bridle Path mansion and meandered up and down Bay, Richmond, Queen, King and other downtown thoroughfares from shortly after 11 p.m. onwards, imbibing out of black solo cups and blasting Drizzy (of course) all along the way.

After running out of free tees to hand (or at times, throw) out, Mark at one point took the shirt off his own back to give to a passing police cruiser.

"I told you, we're out here for the people, that's it. Straight off my back, I had to," he said to Live viewers as the officer is heard yelling "thank you so much" in the background.

Drake instructed the group to head to Scarborough Town Centre and Square One, though the video didn't show if they ended up restocking and making it that far.

The shirts looked to be plain black, emblazoned with lyrics from CLB tracks, as also seen in the same font and style on new billboards that have popped up around the city.

As revealed via a SportsCenter "hack" last week, CLB comes out this Friday, Sept. 3, and may or may not feature some pregnant emoji album art that is confusing the hell out of everyone.

People upset and disappointed after McDonald's Canada reveals new menu item

Canada will have to keep waiting for a treasured retro fast-food offering to return after McDonald's deflated the hopes of an entire nation.

When the international burger titan made the cryptic announcement "THE THING U HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR ARRIVES," hopes were high that we would finally see the return of the discontinued McPizza menu item, a fond memory for Canadians growing up in the 1990s.

What else could Canada have been asking for?

The top response to this tweet was an early clue that McDonald's was unintentionally tapping into some serious nostalgia and building up hopes in the process.

It appears the McDonald's Canada's social media team realized they might have stepped on a millennial nostalgia landmine.

This barrage of McPizza tweets may have been the point where Mickey D's realized their error in hyping up this mystery product reveal.

Capitalizing on the Twitter trend, McDonald's played with all of our minds one more time, posting a customized Canada Heritage Moment featuring McPizza. An entire country held its breath.

The company then clarified — to the disappointment of practically everyone — that McPizza was not the much-hyped announcement.

Some did not handle the news well.

Speculation continued, with plenty of voices weighing in on what they'd like to see announced. Even the Toronto Zoo openly pondered what was coming.

Others made it clear that they weren't going to settle for anything less than McPizza.

Well, it turns out at least some of us were asking for Spicy Chicken McNuggets? This item was discontinued much more recently and didn’t seem to resonate with Canadians on anywhere near the same level McPizza did.

The news is still very fresh, but it seems the reception to this menu item has been mixed so far.

Some feel like the announcement's wording shows a disconnect between the social media team and actual customers. Others had never even heard of Spicy McNuggets before today.

McDonald's is now serving their Spicy Chicken McNuggets at participating locations across the country.

To this day, one McDonald's franchise continues to sell the legendary McPizza. Unfortunately for Canada, this location is in Orlando, Florida. There are more than 1,400 McDonald's locations across Canada, none serving pizza.
