From the wilds of the Tatra Mountains in the south to the 500-mile sandy coastline in the north, Poland has an impressive natural landscape. Its cities have been rejuvenated by a buzzing cultural scene – cities as diverse as Kraków, with its fine medieval old town (pictured), and Łódź, home of the National Film School, whose graduates include Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski, and which is sometimes referred to as HollyŁódź.

Its foodie scene extends from old-school communist-era milk bars to fancy Warsaw restaurants that offer modern twists on traditional dishes. And not forgetting the wódka! But it’s also a country with a proud history of resistance, extending from the second world war to the Gdańsk shipyards of the 1980s. And its people are warm and welcoming.
