Into the Peruvian Amazon: ‘I’m going to show you good things. Let’s start with an anaconda’

On the third leg of his South American trip, our writer heads to the remote city of Iquitos and braves a swim in the Amazon – despite the fearsome reputation of the local fish
Part 1: The alternative Inca Trail
Part 2: Exploring Lake Titicaca

It is an absolute truth, hard-wired into every explorer’s tales, that the Amazon is deadly dangerous. If the electric eels, piranhas, sting rays and caimans don’t get you, the hordes of biting insects and snakes will. Every living thing is ready to devour you or lay eggs under your skin.

And, in a world of water, swimming is particularly risky. When the naturalist, explorer and writer Redmond O’Hanlon ventured upriver, he claimed to have adapted a cricketers’ protective box to pee through: a barrier for the dreaded candiru fish that allegedly swims up the urethra and gets stuck. For men, amputation could be the only solution. But then in the world of old-fashioned exploration, it was mainly men who got to be explorers, and presumably, those who survived were cricketers, or had extremely tight-fitting swimming trunks.

Goan style Caril De Camarao Recipe (Prawn Curry Recipe)

Goan style Caril De Camarao Recipe (Prawn Curry Recipe) is a simple prawn curry that can be made quickly with few ingredients. The curry has a coconut base which is spicy and as well as tangy by the use of tamarind pulp. Traditionally ground coconut are used to make this rich curry but we have changed and added coconut milk to suit the busy home cooks keeping the flavors also intact. Fresh prawns are the best to add more flavor to this dish. The goan cuisine is famous for its seafood and spicy flavor that are ground with whole spices. The cuisine also has slight influence with Portuguese as well.

Serve the Goan style Caril De Camarao Recipe along with parotta or just steamed rice with rava fry to go along with to make it a complete meal.

The British experience of the Mediterranean, 1976

Was this the reason why we set up the Common Market?

‘When we set up the Common Market what was in the back of most of our minds was the Côte d’Azur,’ declared the actor Robert Morley, introducing the Observer’s exploration of Britons and the Med in 1976. His Riviera trips involved a regular ‘ritual potter’ around estate agents chasing a familiar Med fantasy: ‘To wake each morning to the scent of mimosa, to breakfast outdoors… A long swim, a short drink, luncheon under the tree, a slumber in the hammock.’

Morley’s dream was relatable, but his holiday experiences were rarefied: invites to lunch at ‘large, under-furnished, extravagantly shuttered mansions’ where esoteric mousses were served by gloved footmen and guests worried about who was wearing a tiara.

Our epic family adventure hiking through Greece’s Vikos gorge

A rail trip across Europe to the spectacular Zagori region of Greece is the perfect bonding experience for the writer and her 11-year-old son

A cheer goes up as we board our train. We’re catching the Eurostar from London to Paris and a couple so newly married that the bride is still wearing her wedding dress are just ahead of us. Our own excitement may be less visible but it’s just as palpable.

As the train hurtles through the sunny downlands of Kent, I grin at my 11-year-old son, Osian. He is trying to disappear into his hoodie, embarrassed at my trainspotter jokes and the journey’s unexpected romantic twist. Nothing can derail my high spirits, though, at the thought of hiking in one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes, the Vikos gorge in the Pindus mountains of north-west Greece.

Rail route of the month: Nantes to Quimper, France – a Breton classic

In Brittany, modern regional trains with huge windows invite you to soak up the views. Our author’s final piece in her series takes in the line to Finistère

Many rail travellers just dash through France. The fast TGV trains gobble up the miles to be sure, but high-speed lines often defy the warp and weft of the landscape. Yet even on high-speed lines, there are some magic moments. I love the fleeting glimpses of Champagne vineyards between Paris and Strasbourg. On the high-speed line from Paris to Lyon, now over 40 years old, there are dramatic views of the Morvan massif as the railway climbs to almost 500 metres above sea level to skirt the striking granite landscapes of a region well off the regular tourist trails.

The high-speed lines are good for getting somewhere fast, but you need to branch off on to secondary routes to discover a very different France. The country is blessed with a fine network of rural railways. Last year the tourism authorities in Occitanie in the south of France won a Rail Tourism Award for their bold promotion of branch lines, nudging visitors out of their cars and on to trains to explore the gorgeous variety of landscapes which sweep from the Cévennes down to the Pyrenees.

The lost temples of Lake Titicaca: exploring the less developed Bolivian shore

On the second leg of his Amazon adventure, our writer looks at how tourism is supporting locals in an area of remote beauty and rich cultural heritage
Part one: the alternative Machu Picchu

When someone suggests I get up to greet the dawn, there is always a pause … but part of the joy of travel is that you find yourself saying yes, even to bad ideas. Pablo, my guide, has warned me: dawn can be incredible, do not miss it. So when the first gleam of pinkish light hits the east-facing curtain, I leap up.

From the terrace, there is a steep drop to the surface of the lake, which has the patina of hammered copper. A string of seagulls dances across. Seagulls at 4,000 metres in the mountains! Far away the snow-capped Bolivian peaks of Illampu rise from a rose-coloured shore and pierce the immaculate blue of the sky where the last stars are fading. Pablo appears, then Francisco, and we stand in silence, awestruck, until Francisco can no longer contain himself. “Come on. The fishing nets are waiting.”

Spanish city is one of Europe’s top destinations but its popularity has made housing increasingly unaffordable for residents

Barcelona, a top Spanish holiday destination, has announced it will bar apartment rentals to tourists by 2028, an unexpectedly drastic move as it seeks to rein in soaring housing costs and make the city livable for residents.

Berlin by rail: a cold-war adventure

Taking the sleeper train to Berlin, the writer and his teenage son explore the city’s fascinating legacy, eerie buildings, war relics and stunning street art

Eagle-eyed football fans heading to Berlin’s Olympiastadion for the Euros may spot what looks like an abandoned space station topped with four enormous white orbs on a hill a mile or so south of the ground.

The stadium – which will host the Euro 2024 final – has a more storied past than perhaps any other. Built by the Nazis for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the great African American sprinter Jesse Owens won four gold medals here in front of a watching Adolf Hitler, single-handedly debunking the Führer’s myth of Aryan supremacy.

Wild west: a walk on Brittany’s rugged Crozon peninsula

The fishing villages, clifftop paths and sandy coves of the Breton coast provide the perfect backdrop for a five-day hike

They say walking is the best medicine and you could spend months walking off your troubles along the sentier des douaniers (customs officers’ path), which winds for more than 1,240 miles (2,000km) around the bays and headlands of the Breton coast. However, me and my perennial walking companion, an Irishman who lives in Bath, settled for a five-day, 55-mile stretch along the southern Crozon peninsula.

As we agreed not to fly, he took the train to Plymouth, the ferry to Roscoff and buses from there, while I took the train from Barcelona and, after a night in Paris, another train to Quimper and a bus to our starting point at Camaret-sur-Mer.

Paris can wait: how we dodged the summer crowds by Interrailing to Europe’s smaller towns

We took our teenage sons on quieter tracks – to Utrecht rather than Amsterdam, Baden-Baden not Berlin – and enjoyed a less frantic rail tour of Europe

We were sitting enjoying a quiet beer at a bar in Ghent when I realised we’d made the right decision. Ghent was humming but not heaving, cheerful but not chaotic. It was the first night of our three-week Interrail trip with our 18- and 16-year-old sons. Now, after a long train journey, the calm ambience of the medieval Belgian city left us feeling relaxed rather than exhausted.

An Interrail ticket opens up 33 European countries by rail and many people seize the opportunity to visit capital cities on their bucket list. A typical itinerary takes in big hitters like Paris, Prague, Rome and Madrid. We decided to do things a little differently.

The alternative Machu Picchu: a hike to find the ‘real’ lost world of the Incas

At the start of a 3,000-mile journey down the Amazon, our writer witnesses the benefits of community tourism projects on a less crowded option to the Inca Trail

‘It’s very simple,” Bruce says. “If travellers go far, on long-haul journeys, they should go for longer.” I’m sitting in a Peruvian mountain village with Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, a Canadian travel company with a mission. Below us on a narrow rocky terrace, a group of brightly dressed women in bowler hats are chatting while they work. Some are spinning alpaca wool, others are knitting, and a couple are weaving narrow strips of cloth. “Travellers need to connect with locals,” Bruce continues, “but they should also bring economic benefits to communities.”

I am in South America on a mission myself. I want to see how, or if, tourism can help with the huge challenges of social inequality and the climate crisis. I’m taking Bruce’s advice about travelling for longer to heart: I am going to loop south through Bolivia, then start a 3,000-mile journey down the Amazon to where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. En route, I want to see how the individual tourist can support worthwhile projects, particularly with Indigenous peoples, and also enjoy a wonderful experience.

Homemade Pita Bread Recipe - Quick and Simple Recipe

Pitta or Pita Bread is a round pocket bread that is predominant in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Cuisines. Traditionally called as khubz (ordinary bread) it is similar to the Indian flat puffed flatbread (Phulkas ) which is also a bread of the common man. It can be made in various shapes and sizes, although if you are going to use it as a pocket for filling then the circular shape is preferred.

Traditionally and even now in most middle eastern countries, the bread is prepared in the tannur which is similar to the brick oven or the modern tandoor. Pita bread is baked in the oven at very high temperatures (450F / 250C) causing the flattened bread to puff quickly, retaining moisture and softness. Different countries use the bread differently, some along with dips, some use it to fill in with pockets and others bake such that there are no pockets.

Note: here is the Instant Active Dry Yeast I am using for these recipes. Always keep the opened yeast in the freezer section.

Serve the delicious Pita Bread along with Tabbouleh, Falafel and Hummus for lunch or dinner.
