Communal dining is Copenhagen’s best-kept culinary secret

Eating out in Denmark can be costly, but a growing number of child-friendly community supper clubs in the capital offer affordable feasting with the locals

Copenhagen is a gastronome’s paradise. Stroll around the Danish capital’s elegant boulevards and before long you’re bound to stumble upon a hallowed, Michelin-starred temple of New Nordic cuisine. However, there’s a cheaper and more convivial side to the city’s culinary scene: its communal supper tables.

Leading the way is the community centre Absalon, a former church in the smart Vesterbro neighbourhood. On a Sunday evening in September, the air buzzes with conversation and the clatter of cutlery as about 200 people tuck into bowls of steaming tomato lentil soup and piles of fried potatoes in a creamy fennel and chive sauce. This is the nightly fællesspisning dinner (the Danish word loosely translates as communal dining), featuring long tables, shared by strangers. The menu changes daily to spotlight locally sourced ingredients made into affordable dishes that are served tableside by the guests themselves.

Shipwrecks, sea birds and whale spotting: exploring Ireland’s first marine park

A vast swathe of the rugged Kerry coast and its Atlantic isles is now a protected haven for wildlife, and the occasional Jedi knight

I’m crouching in a windowless stone cell, peering at a ball of fluff stuffed into a crack in the floor. The cell is a beehive hut, or clochán; 1,400 years ago, it offered sleeping quarters to monks. The fluff is a baby seabird – to be precise, the chick of a European storm petrel. As my eyes adjust, I make out the glint of a tiny eye. After dark, the parents will return with food. For now, the chick sits tight.

Storm petrels nest only on remote, uninhabited islands, so seeing a chick is a rare privilege. I give the bird its privacy and crawl back outside – gasping anew at my surroundings. I’m high on a vertiginous rock outcrop in the Atlantic, just south-west of Ireland’s south-west corner.

Walking the Celtic Camino: new coast path links sacred sites in Ireland and Wales

Ancient chapels, neolithic sites, vast beaches and live music are among the highlights of a new pilgrimage route from Wexford to St Davids

Nick and I are standing by the old Norman tower on the sacred isle. “We would come on the pilgrimage when we were kids,” he’s telling me. “Walk all around the island with thousands of others. All the cousins and friends doing the stations of the cross.”

We wander behind the tower, and in the trees are ribbons, cards and photographs. “It’s a bit pagan now,” he says, “but still very popular.” He’s a volunteer, helping to establish a new footpath, the Wexford-Pembrokeshire Pilgrim Way, which links south-east Ireland and Wales. I’m on my third day along the new footpath and have discovered that my route coincides with this more traditional Roman Catholic pilgrimage site at Our Lady’s Island near Rosslare, a venue that attracts around 50,000 pilgrims every August.

A cycling, walking and running break in France’s best area for trails

Bagnoles de l’Orne in Normandy is a traditional spa town reinventing itself with new hiking and cycling routes – and a focus on sustainable tourism

Kévin Raimond was teaching me how to walk. I thought I already knew, but this tall, bearded, laid-back Frenchman had fresh wisdom to impart. “Inhale for three steps, hold your breath for one,” he said, hands pressed to his inflating belly. “Then exhale for three steps and hold for one. And repeat.”

Afghan walking is a technique used by nomads in Afghanistan. It is supposed to reduce stress, improve circulation and increase stamina, enabling them to cover vast distances with minimal effort. As Kévin and I were exploring the Andaines Forest, in south-west Normandy – part of what has become the largest waymarked area in France – I thought some stamina might prove useful.

Radish Soup Recipe

Radish is a root vegetable which is pungent or sweet in taste with lots of juice. Radishes are very filling which will satisfy your hunger packs without increasing your calorie count. They have very low digestible carbohydrates and contain a lot of water, thus making it a very good dietary option for weight loss. They do have a low glycemic index which increases the efficiency of metabolism and a great option for diabetics patients. Radish, being a bundle of nutrients is often underestimated and not used in everyday cooking. When you want to include more veggies in your food, then the best option is to blend them. I have prepared the soup with purple ones but that doesn’t stop you from trying it with white ones. Radish soup can be easily prepared with minimal ingredients and tastes delicious, you will not have a clue of pungency in the soup.

Prepare Radish soup effortlessly and enjoy as a mid snack or just sip it before your lunch or dinner during winters.

By volunteering around the world, I found my purpose in life, my husband and my roots

Working with charities, farms and rural development projects has been life-changing for our writer – and is something anyone can do, regardless of background

The first time I joined a volunteering trip I was 22, and had no idea what I wanted to do in life. It was in the summer of my third year at university, in 2018, and the project was a 10-week expedition with Raleigh International in Malaysian Borneo.

Raleigh offered bursaries, covering flights, insurance and vaccinations, to people from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds [Raleigh International Trust went into administration in May 2022 and was acquired by The Impact Travel Group but still offers expeditions]. I was thrilled to be given a place on the scheme, and the bursary was a huge help. It also meant my fundraising target before the trip was reduced from the £2,000-plus they typically ask for to £800.

Eight months off school, but we all learned so much: a family sabbatical in South America

Travelling around Chile, Argentina and Peru – with a focus on Indigenous tourism – is a transformative adventure
Plus 10 tips on planning a family gap year

It was on holiday in Italy in 2022, after perhaps a little too much wine, that the decision was made: Mirjam Peternek-McCartney and her husband, Mark, would take a year’s sabbatical – with their (then) 10- and 13-year-old sons, Lukas and David. “We told the kids in the morning and after that we couldn’t back out … They were excited and it all started to feel more real,” says Mirjam, who lives in the Cotswolds and runs a PR company.

While the couple had discussed the idea of taking extended time out from their daily lives before (they had been on sabbaticals together and lived abroad), Covid brought what was important to them into sharp focus – spending time together as a family and travelling. With Mark turning 50 and David’s GCSEs not too far away, it felt like a now or never moment.

Waterford revival: the reinvention of Ireland’s oldest city

From Viking history, to its wild coastline and even its ‘damp’ weather, Waterford has taken its natural assets and run with them

It was a pretty long interregnum, about 1,000 years, but Waterford is once again a hot travel destination.

The Vikings were the first to popularise this corner of south-east Ireland, liking it so much they settled, built a town and called it Vadrarfjordr, Norse for “winter port”, around AD914. There was no better refuge for weary raiders to rest and recuperate.

Mountains, beaches, history – why Belgrade to Bar is one of the best train rides in Europe

The 300-mile line between Serbia and Montenegro, built in Tito’s era, connects city and seaside for a blissful Balkan holiday

It started with a disagreement. Where to go on an early autumn break? I wanted a city and history, my boyfriend wanted coast and stunning scenery. The solution? Two days in the Serbian capital Belgrade, a train ride to Montenegro, and some time on the Adriatic. In the end, the cinematic train journey proved the real star of the show.

Belgrade is an eclectic mix of Habsburg, Ottoman and brutalist architecture with a buzzy nightlife. At the Museum of Yugoslavia we learn that the Belgrade to Montenegro train was one of former communist president-dictator Tito’s proudest projects. The line opened to great fanfare in 1976, after Yugoslavian engineers had spent 20 years burrowing through mountains to reach the Adriatic, carving out 254 tunnels and 435 bridges.

Persian Style Taftan Recipe

Persian Style Taftan Recipe is a leavened Bread that is famous from Persian, Pakistani and Uttar Pradesh. The bread is made from milk, yogurt and eggs. The bread is then sometimes flavored with saffron cardamom as well. It is then topped with kalonji seeds and baked in the often till golden brown.

Note: I have over the years noticed that the flour that is used is very important to get the right texture. The more fresh the flour the better the bread, the more the flour has sat in your flour box or an opened packet, the less fresh it feels. The flours also differ from region to region, so it takes time getting used to a flour and before you know and get adapted to the new flour.

A late summer break in Montpellier, one of France’s sunniest cities

The reinvention of Montpellier from ancient university town to ‘Berlin by the Med’ is in full swing, and late summer is the best time to visit

Strolling around the Estanove district, just south-west of Montpellier centre, it’s hard not to feel excited by how this Mediterranean city is transforming for the 21st century. Here, on a brownfield former military site next to leafy Parc Montcalm, the city is building one of several “eco” districts – this one will link its new Cité Créative (a cluster of schools devoted to culture and the creative industries, including animation and games art) with the park.

That will be a while away, but there are already many reasons to visit this youthful and energetic city, whose reinvention is in full swing. (It’s one of the oldest university towns in France, and according to the tourist board one inhabitant in five is a student.) Le Halle Tropisme, a former machine hall built in 1913, has in recent years been transformed into a huge creative village for live music, clubbing, festivals, flea markets and games of pétanque, with plentiful street food and natural wine and craft beer stalls.

Port Stephens is two and a half hours north of Sydney on country traditionally owned by the Worimi. It’s a huge area but tourists usually just think of Nelson Bay. When locals refer to “the bay”, though, we mean Anna Bay to Soldiers Point, about a 30-minute drive, with Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Corlette and Salamander Bay in between.

My favourite late summer city break in southern Europe: readers’ tips

Beaches on Sardinia, food markets in Aix-en-Provence and historic Sarajevo are among our tipsters’ highlights

The town of San Remo on the Ligurian coast, between Genoa and Nice, has the air of a faded grand old lady, a little bit down on her luck but with plenty of dash still on offer. Blessed with the most enticing and charming streets of a medieval old town that meanders upwards in car-free bliss, on the way have lunch at La Ciotola (Via S Stefano 4) where the ravioli is homemade and superb. San Remo has a brilliant market where you can buy anything from essential undies to bagfuls of chilli with the tongue-in-cheek claim that it is meglio del viagra (better than Viagra). Autumn is still warm and sunny and the best beach to try is Tre Ponti, which is where the locals go given that a lot of hotels in Italy bag the best places on the coast for their guests.

‘The hike of a lifetime’ – a circuit of the Écrins national park in France

The Tour des Écrins in the Hautes-Alpes is one of Europe’s finest long-distance walks, and offers a chance to reflect on how best to live alongside nature

I first learned about the Écrins national park in relation to a specific nature reserve within it. The réserve intégrale du Lauvitel was established in 1995 to “monitor the natural dynamics of ecosystems” with all human influence removed. This so-called wilderness area was one of the first of its kind in Europe.

A video showed an ecologist rowing across a dazzling, teal-hued lake surrounded by pine-strewn peaks. I was immediately fascinated. Admittedly, a forbidden zone taps into plenty of childhood adventure fantasies, but it’s also a bold statutory move a world apart from our more modest environmental experiments in the UK. Yet fortress conservation begs difficult questions: are humans a part of nature, or apart from it?

‘Just the right amount of edge’: how Marseille became 2024’s on-trend city

Thanks to buzzy cafes and the backing of Chanel’s fashion supremos, France’s oldest city is having its moment

When a place becomes a meme, you know it is having a moment. This is what is happening to Marseille, which found its name plastered on a satirical Instagram account this week. “‘Mate was finkin’ of goin’ Marseille? Apparently it’s poppin’ off!?’,” read the caption on the viral Socks House Meeting fashion account that satirises the absurdities of trends, usually with an eye to London’s cultural niches but with a foothold in wider British internet humour.

It was accompanied by a picture of the type of lifestyle and fashion staples that a certain kind of traveller might enjoy while in the southern French city, including a skinny Vogue cigarette, on-trend wraparound sunglasses and a bottle of Terre d’Hermès eau de toilette.

Ganesh Chaturthi holds a special place in my heart. Every year, the arrival of Lord Ganesha brings with it a sense of joy, devotion, and an opportunity to indulge in traditional delicacies that have been passed down through generations. One Spanish region where tourists are welcome – especially spaghetti western fans

A new walking route around Burgos, in northern Spain, offers film pilgrims a close-up of the iconic locations used in Sergio Leone’s movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

In the mountains of northern Spain, the sleepy town of Santo Domingo de Silos is accustomed to welcoming pilgrims. In the province of Burgos, on the Camino de Santiago, it is home to one of Spain’s most famous monasteries.

Built in the seventh century, the Monasterio de San Francisco was catapulted to unlikely stardom in 1994 when its monks had a surprise chart hit with an album of Gregorian chant that sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. The proceeds went towards restoration of the crumbling structure, which was carried out by local builders.

Driving to the Italian Alps with two small kids – and camping: the unholy trinity of travel?

The idea of a family road trip across Europe to reach Trentino’s celebrated Lago di Ledro felt daunting. Turns out getting there was more than half the fun

Floating motionless in the deep water of northern Italy’s exquisite Lago di Ledro in beating sun, I felt the contradictory sensation of simultaneous exertion and relaxation. My heart was thumping from the front crawl I’d just done, yet my mind basked in the beauty of this tree-lined valley and my brief, heavenly solitude.

I could pretend this was fortuitous, but in truth my dash to the centre of this little lake in the south of the Trentino region – at the exact midpoint of a three-week round trip from England to Italy by car – was premeditated. As a parent of two under-fives (at that moment happily distracted on shore), I had been visualising this for months: the revitalising lake swim alone was more or less justification for the 2,000-plus road miles. What I hadn’t pictured, however, were the swallows that would join me there, gracefully swooping within metres of my body, feeding out of reach from the hubbub at the lake’s circumference and – I like to think – out of earshot of their own young, chirruping in their nests.

Viennese waltz: top travel tips for a spin around Austria’s capital

From the ferris wheel featured in the Third Man to an evening with Mozart and the world’s largest collection of Klimts, here’s how to make the most of a break in Vienna

Walk some of the city’s 23 districts, each one with its own distinct identity and history. The 9th district is a great place to start. Elegant and rich in art nouveau and art deco architecture, it was also home to Beethoven, Schubert and Freud. Visit one of the most famous addresses in psychoanalytic history, Wien IX, Berggasse 19, Sigmund Freud’s apartment before he fled the Nazis for London in 1938; and the Narrenturm (Fool’s Tower), the first hospital for the mentally ill in Europe, where Freud would have gained first-hand experience. Nearby is the French Quarter: the bakery La Mercerie on Berggasse 25 has the best croissants in Vienna, while Servitengasse is lined with pretty shops and restaurants – a neighbourhood favourite for pasta is La Scala. Try walking guide Alessandra Brucchietti at viennaviral.com.
