I grew up on Turkish burgers. The real food blew me away

With a storytelling local as a guide, Istanbul opens up to become more than its famous landmarks

I grew up in a terrace house in Portsmouth. At one end of the street was Fratton Park, where the local football team played, and at the other was the Istanbul Grill House. Only one of these venues was in the habit of providing value for money.

Between the ages of seven and 11, I’d go to the Istanbul Grill House every Saturday with my pocket money. Each time I entered, the guy who worked there would salute me theatrically and say, “Merhaba, my friend – hello, hello.” I’d give him a wink, swap some football stickers with his son then place my order. It would always be a cheeseburger. Having just got back from Istanbul – and loving that city’s range of tasty staples – I now look back on my childish routine with no small amount of regret.

Paya Curry Recipe | Lamb Trotters

Paya Curry is a recipe made of lamb trotters. South India is known for its spicy twist of Non vegetarian dishes, using almost every part of the animal to cook a meal. If you are a true blue foodie, you would have either dined or heard of traditional military hotels or a food mess serving some authentic, regional dishes that one cannot find in most of the commercial restaurants. These places do not offer an ambiance, you need to be an early riser to enjoy their menu and they are great on taste plus value for money.

As a kid, I grew up in a family who loved non veg food. I've grown up watching my aunts descaling fishes, breaking down a whole chicken into curry pieces and also using those special parts (spare parts like some of us would say) - goat brains, liver chops, udder and then the once in a quarter affair would be -  trotter soup served with piping hot rice, rotis for lunch.

I have always relished the one that my mom prepares back home than the ones served in a restaurant. Since commercial Trotter soups are way too watery, they just present the whole leg that kinda isn't appetizing to my senses. So homemade one is something that I wouldn't mind eating once in a while. Since it's more hygienic, tastier and the consistency of mom's broth is just about perfect. This is, of course, her recipe.

Six perfect unsung city breaks in Europe – from Ghent to Naples

No famous capitals, fewer tourists, loads to see, excellent food – and all a train ride away

The Netherlands’ second city is a winner for those weary of its more famous (and oversubscribed) rival. Sure, there’s water – it’s Europe’s largest port, after all – with rivers, canals and harbours at every turn. But this sprawling metropolis doesn’t yield its pleasures as easily as Amsterdam, largely because second world war bombing destroyed most of the historic centre. Its pioneering postwar architecture is, however, what makes “Manhattan on the Maas” so fascinating.

Treasures include the 1970s Cube Houses designed by Piet Blom, the landmark cable-stayed Erasmus Bridge, the 1960 retro-futuristic Euromast and eclectic buildings in the leafily landscaped Museumpark. Alongside design museum Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Kunsthal gallery, a must-visit is The Depot, an ambitious €94m bowl-shaped “storage facility” for the city’s art collection, its rooftop cafe boasting panoramic views. Equally compelling is Delfshaven, which escaped bombing, and is now home to waterside pubs, a microbrewery and tucked-away restaurants.
