8ASH – 3-In-1 Concept With American-Japanese Burgers Like Okonomiyaki Burger. $1 Burger Opening Special

I wonder if there is the “Shake Shack” effect as we are seeing more burger places (including those in hawker centres) opening up in Singapore in the last year or so.

Well, this new kid on the Hill – Ann Siang Hill, is not exactly a burger place but a multi-concept modern casual diner.

However, there are two burger concepts out of the three brands – which include Mirai Burgers, Love Handle Burgers which serves vegan items.

The third is Hoshi Hill which offering Japanese set meals and donburi, like Teriyaki Chicken Donburi ($12.80) and Salmon Mentaiko Aburi Donburi ($18.80).

The name may sound slightly awkward (or hip depending how you see it), called “8ASH” because it is on 8 Ann Siang Hill (sodesu).

It has a tech-driven kitchen on the first floor and dining space on the second, decorated in retro red and white.

By the way, 8ASH is opposite ANOTHER burger restaurant The Corner Grill, and some healthy competition shall be going on.

As I was dining alone, Mirai Burgers seemed the most appealing to me, offering American-Japanese burgers.

Some of the interesting choices include the Ultimate Fish & Caviar Burger ($22) with hake fillet and caviar tartrate; and Yuzu Karaage Burger ($14) of fried chicken in yuzu kyosho batter, American slaw and mature cheddar.

Meat-lovers can go for the Shaun-San ($20) with house-mixed wagyu shortrib patty, bacon, mature cheddar, provolone, onions and housemade special sauce.

I was in the mood for unique-ness and so went for the Katsu Okonomiyaki Burger ($16). To be fair, I really enjoyed the crispy and juicy pork katsu, because many pork cutlet I had of late were either too tough or fatty.

Sandwiched within were bonito flakes with that distinct ‘fragrance’ that reminded me of vaguely of Osaka.

Drizzled within was Bulldog sauce – a type of Japanese fruity sauce typically used for tonkatsu.

There was some close resemblance, but perhaps not as thick and gloopy as the Okonomiyaki sauce. Some more mayonnaise would have helped seal the deal for me.

Worthy to mention were the crispy fries (top up $3 for set with drink) that had those curly fries exterior texture and softness, except that these were straight.

To kick off their launch, 8ASH will be offering an offer where the first 150 in the queue on the 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th of November from 5pm – 9:30pm can purchase 8ASH burgers and other signature dishes at just $1. Not as straight-forward because you need to post some things in your IGS. More details on their social media.
