Looks like Soufflé Pancakes are all in trend in Singapore.
And Bangkok Jam has brought an interesting Thai twist to these desserts, with the introduction of Mango Sticky Rice Soufflé Pancakes and Thai Milk Tea Soufflé Pancakes.
Inspired by the vibrant city of Bangkok, Bangkok Jam is an urban Thai food concept offering modern interpretations of traditional Thai cuisine, which many foodies should be familiar with.
Regulars often order their savoury signatures such as the Fried Chicken Mid Joints ($10.90), Grilled Pork Skewers ($11.90), Thai Massaman Curry ($17.90), Slow-cooked Beef Noodles Soup ($14.90), Stir-fried Kway Teow ($12.90) and more.
Bangkok Jam has recently expanded their sweet range, with all-new handcrafted desserts like soufflé pancakes, waffles and unique creations not many may know about.
Note that these new dessert items are available only at their Plaza Singapura, Great World and Bugis+ outlets.
Diners can also “Go Lean & Green” as they offer Green Monday Specials, available at Plaza Singapura and Great World outlets. I thought it would be good chance to try out the more unique items from the revamped menu. More below:
Mix Grill Platter ($36.90)
This is good for a family or group to share, with an appetising assortment of Thai street food style grilled meats and seafood.
The platter comprises of grilled chicken breast, two chunky pork skewers, a sliced slab of beef steak, and a pair of charred prawns.
The irresistibly smoky aroma and flavours are complemented with Bangkok Jam’s Signature Salad. Waiting time of 15-20 minutes required for this fresh-off-the-grill item.
Chef’s Special 5-Spice Stewed Pork ($13.90)
This Chef’s Special tom saab is a filling main made by stewing tender chunks of pork ribs and presented in a tangy broth.
Infused with fresh lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves, the fragrant soup is enhanced by added lime juice and chopped chilies.
Enjoy this meaty hot and sour soup served with soft-yolk eggs, and you may pair it up with rice.
Tom Yum Fried Rice ($13.90)
The must-have carbs to complement your viands is khao phad tom yum, a Thai-style fried rice dish tossed with prawns.
What makes this even special is the usage of Alchemy Fibre, a plant-based powder high in dietary fibre and containing prebiotics. (Accordingly, Alchemy Fibre provides 3x more fibre content than brown rice and makes your rice digest as slowly too, all while maintaining the soft and fluffy texture of white rice.)
This dish-made-healthier is served with soft-yoked egg, lime wedge, pickled veggies, and Thai condiment prik nam pla.
To be honest, there were only subtle differences after adding the fibre, with the rice perhaps tasting less sweet (maybe that’s also psychological) but you couldn’t tell.
Exclusively available at Bangkok Jam Plaza Singapura, all the other rice dishes such as Minced Basil Beef with Thai Jasmine Rice ($14.90), Olive Fried Rice with Minced Pork ($12.90), Pineapple Fried Rice with Seafood ($12.90) and Sambal Fried Rice with Chicken ($12.90) are prepared with this Alchemy Fibre.
Beyond Sausage Phad Thai ($15.90)
This Green Monday Special is a plant-based dish recommended for vegans and vegetarians. Prepared with a plant-based meat, this dish features meat-free sausage and noodles in a fragrant Thai Red Curry.
Served with lime wedge for a touch of sparkling acidity, and crushed peanuts for some crunch.
Green Curry with Heura Chicken ($12.90)
The other meat-free dish for you to curry on is the gaeng keaw wan gai or Thai Green Curry.
Made with Heura, a vegan-friendly chicken alternative made with European soy, olive oil, salt and spice, this dish is recommended for those following the vegan lifestyle.
The mouth-feel and even taste of the Heura was rather similar to chicken, especially when it was covered by the creaminess and spices of the curry.
The rich, green-coloured coconut sauce is spicy, aromatic, sweet and savoury at the same time.
Mango Sticky Rice Soufflé ($16.90)
Sweeten up the ending with a Thai-version of the Western soufflé, featuring thick yet fluffy pancakes served atop sweet sticky rice.
Beautifully garnished with ripe mango cubes, pomelo bits and dried rose petals, this dish is served with coconut cream for that lovely decadence.
This soufflé comes in a stack of three fluffy discs, making it an ideal dessert for sharing.
What was appealing was that obvious rose-floral scent just when the pancakes were delivered to the table.
Pour some of the coconut cream over the stack and sticky rice, and experience two-desserts-in-one: both the softness of the pancakes with Mango Sticky Rice.
But then, good things come to those who wait. You’d need to wait for at least 20-25 minutes (more during peak periods) to get your hands on this chef-recommended soufflé.
Thai Milk Tea Soufflé ($16.90)
This stack of pancakes is served with smooth Thai Milk Tea pudding, chewy tapioca pearls and sweet Thai Milk Tea cream.
While it may not seem as exciting as the Mango Sticky Rice (though that the tea cream could be milkier, I enjoyed the accompanying wobbly-smooth Thai Milk Tea pudding.
There is also a Mix Berries Citrus Soufflé ($16.90) with fluffy soufflé stacks, sweet berries and refreshing citrus sauce.
Pandan Coffee Cloud Nine ($13.90)
This creation is a light and airy treat, pillow-soft it is reminiscent of bouncy clouds.
Held in a ramekin, the soft cake combines the fragrance of pandan leaves and the aroma of coffee.
Indulge your taste buds as you blend in the gula melaka and coconut ice cream for a better sensation.
Crispy Vanilla Waffle ($15.90)
Crisp on the edges but fluffy on the inside, the toasted waffle is topped with cubes of fresh ripe mango, cream, coconut ice cream and a drizzle of raspberry sauce.
There is also a Crispy Chocolate Waffle ($16.90) version crowned with coconut chantilly, cherry compote and chocolate ice cream.
Red Velvet Banana Lava Cake ($14.90)
A moist lava cake with a chocolatey liquid center, served with caramelised bananas, meringue and vanilla ice cream.
Thai Milk Tea Crepe Cake ($9.90)
Got room for more dessert? Order the popular Thai Milk Tea Crepe Cake, with a trio of Thai tea-flavoured crepe cake, whipped ganache, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Salted Caramel Thai Milk Tea with Coffee Pearls ($6.90)
Refresh with an upgraded version of the classic Thai milk tea. Flavoured with salted caramel, this iconic Thai beverage comes with handmade coffee-flavoured pearls.
Enjoy these chewy and bouncy balls as you slurp the creamy, sweet-salty chilled tea.
