Scaling the fairytale peaks of Saxon Switzerland in Germany

The dramatic landscape was beloved of Romantic painters and hardcore climbers. But the spa town of Bad Schandau provides a gentler introduction for skinny-calfed explorers

Look at that on the rock. Do you know what it tells us?” Kristin Arnold, my guide in south-east Germany’s Saxon Switzerland national park, points at a large mass of light green moss growing on a boulder.

It tells us that the air quality is great here,” says Kristin. “This moss doesn’t grow if there’s any pollution around.” She inhales deeply, causing the backpack buckles strapped across her chest to creak. It’s contagious, like a yawn. The chirrupping of unseen birds and drizzle on fern mix with the sounds of our breath as we fill our lungs with premium Saxony oxygen.

An Olympian effort: my struggle to cycle from London to Paris

The 250-mile Avenue Verte cycle route opened in time for the 2012 London Olympics. One side of the Channel is a smooth ride, the other is not fit for purpose – but that could all change thanks to the vision of one man

I’m bashing my way through thick foliage atop a long-disused railway embankment somewhere outside Sevenoaks, using my bicycle as a battering ram against the brambles and nettles. My guide has disappeared ahead into the wilderness. Beside and beyond us are fields and views, but I can’t see them. I’m being asked to imagine, though, what this route could be, given the chance. I’m following a man who has hoped for two decades to reroute the English portion of what he believes could be a “yellow brick road” for cycling, linking London and Paris.

The existing route, the Avenue Verte (AV) was inaugurated ahead of the London 2012 Olympics, forging a symbolic and physical connection between the two capital cities. However, while the French portion was lavished with new, smoothly surfaced greenways, a lack of funding and political will meant on the English side a make-do-and-mend spirit has, until now, prevailed. Now that it’s Paris’s turn to hold the Olympic flame, thoughts have returned to this unfinished route.

My Scandinavian summer: a campervan trip across Denmark and southern Sweden

Our writer, partner and dog hit the road to Malmö, joining the locals at campsites and pausing for swims, walks and sauna sessions en route

I’m a mid-life cliche. I bought a campervan (Margo) and a dog (Maggie May) in lockdown. I dream of a life in Scandinavia – of forests, fika and foraging. I swim in the cold sea. But however cliched, the campervan has allowed my partner, me and the dog to go on adventures we couldn’t afford otherwise. We’ve roamed the Lake District, and camped on the Welsh coast. Last year, we hit the continent.

We meant to do it in 2022, aiming for northern Spain, but wildfires meant a last-minute pivot to Wales (which was wonderful but didn’t scratch the “abroad” itch). So last June we tried again, but instead of heading to the sunbaked south we turned east from Calais towards Denmark and southern Sweden. We had just over two weeks, aiming for Malmö.

Rediscovering Dubrovnik: the pearl of the Adriatic

Turkish baklava, Greek moussaka, Italian pasta – the Croatian city’s complex history is reflected in its food. And then there’s its filmic looks and stunning location

It is early morning in the Old Town, when the tangle of pretty cobbled alleyways and ancient stone stairways are relatively empty and you can wander around the creamy, marbled Stradun (Placa) – Main Street – free from the crowds.

It would be tempting to stop at one of the cafés or browse the markets in Gundulic Square – its stalls piled high with strawberries, oranges, fresh figs and cherries – but our guide, Ante Daničić, has other ideas and is keen to get on. To truly appreciate Dubrovnik, you have to learn about its history first. “You need to understand that it’s always been a melting pot here,” says Daničić. “You can see it in the food,” he says: “Turkish baklava, Greek moussaka, Italian pasta. Bari in Puglia is only four hours across the Adriatic by speed boat.”

No one wants that, Someday when you have excess khichdi and it seems to be unpalatable as it gets cold. Reheating it will alter the texture and taste. ‘Scotland in miniature’: why the Isle of Arran is perfect for a family holiday

With its mysterious stones, fairytale waterfalls and dinosaur footprints, Arran is a magical playground for children

As we climb up to Eas Mor waterfall in the south of the island of Arran, I pause to read the words carved into a fallen tree across our path: “Bow your head for you enter sacred and magical lands.” There’s a lot about Arran that is sacred and magical. Growing up in Glasgow, I went to the island several times as a child, played mini golf at Brodick and spent hours combing beaches for perfectly smooth, multicoloured stones. My husband’s family used to decamp from London for long summer holidays too: stories of three-year-olds trudging up Goatfell – the island’s tallest peak at 874 metres – are the stuff of family fable.

We have two children of our own now – Henry, eight, and Isobel, five – and we brought them back to this beautiful Firth of Clyde island in May half-term. Arran is often dubbed “Scotland in miniature”, but that is especially true and pertinent for families. You can be there in about two hours from Glasgow, and the island’s main road is a continuous 55-mile loop around its coast, taking in wild beaches, misty castles, whisky distilleries and looming granite mountains.

The other Dordogne: exploring France’s unspoiled Périgord region

The department’s sleepy capital and historic market towns offer a snapshot of an old-fashioned rural way of life far removed from the tourist trail

It’s always good to be back in Périgueux. Though the administrative capital of the Dordogne lies in one of the French regions best known to British holidaymakers, it manages to remain relatively innocent of tourism. Yet this sleepy flâneur of a town, built on limestone quays above the River Isle, is full of charm.

It is, after all, at the heart of a proudly gastronomic region. Tourism contributes almost a quarter of the department’s income. But call the area by its regional name, Périgord, and the lens shifts. This is the country of truffles and cèpes, walnuts, poultry, confit duck and (like it or not) foie gras; of cheeses and sunflowers; figs and freshwater fish; buttery tartines and heady vin de noix.

Nice and easy: a leisurely cycle, with dog, along the final stage of the Tour de France

The riders won’t have time to take in the beauty of Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, but they’re missing two centuries of seaside architectural treasures

The Tour de France ends in Nice this Sunday – the first time the race will finish outside Paris since it started in 1903, and the first time since 1989 that the winner’s yellow jersey will be decided by a final-day time trial.

The Tour’s arrival in Nice also coincides with the 200th anniversary of the city’s Promenade des Anglais, the seafront walkway partly funded by English chaplain Lewis Way. The rest of the work on the paved Camin dei Ingles, as it was originally known, was paid for by Way’s congregation, and the first section was finished in 1824. Two hundred years on, I’m cycling along the rosé-coloured promenade with my dog Rio in the front basket, his ears fluttering in the sea breeze as we head for the Plage des Chiens, halfway to the airport.

Copenhagen offers tourist rewards as other EU nations clamp down

The Danish capital hopes to lure climate-friendly and well-behaved travellers with perks such as free drinks and skiing

In Barcelona visitors have been sprayed with water pistols in an expression of local people’s anger about over-tourism. By contrast in Copenhagen, tourists are to be given financial and other incentives to come – as long as they act responsibly.

The Danish capital appears to be bucking the trend of other travel hotspots struggling under the burden of too many tourists, by attempting to lure only the well-behaved, socially and environmentally conscious traveller.

How I found bliss cycling along the coast of Estonia

A cycle trip along the country’s coast and through its woods offers the kind of magical wildlife encounters that are no longer possible in the UK

I was barely out of Pärnu on the first morning when it happened. I’d stopped to listen to the reed warblers in a broad belt of roadside wetland. Down at my feet were four types of orchid, and cuckoos were calling. It was the beginning of my trip: I didn’t know that I would be seeing and hearing those things continuously for the next week. But this was no nature reserve, simply an ordinary Estonian country lane, close to the coast and the Lithuanian border.

I got back on the bike and pushed hard to get the pedals moving. I was carrying two heavily laden panniers. That was when the deer, crouched in a ditch a few feet away, decided that concealment was over. It sprang out, eyes wide open, its coat a deep chestnut brown, and leaped. It went over the front wheel, then over the opposite ditch, then over the fence beyond and into a clump of foxgloves, a miraculous Bob Beamon triple jump. The deer’s sudden movement triggered two enormous grey birds, cranes, to start charging across a distant meadow, rising up in the air with great echoing whoops of alarm. Their panic spread to seven herons that launched out of a distant tree. I knew then that my Estonian summer bike ride was going to be special.

‘We hiked green volcanoes near Barcelona’: readers’ favourite day trips from cities

Our tipsters revel in rural escapes and dips in the sea on their city breaks from Gdańsk to Lisbon

After a couple of days exploring beautiful Salzburg, I bought a hop-on, hop-off bus ticket to the Austrian lake district – the Salzkammergut. The hotel receptionist recommended we headed to Fuschl am See. The hourly bus took about 40 minutes to get to this absolute gem. The lake water – perfect for summer swimming – is so clean it is officially drinkable. There are also charming guesthouses and small hotels. It is an absolutely beautiful spot and the whole area should be explored.

Thai Style Fried Bananas Recipe

Thai Style Fried Bananas Recipe is a simple and quick dish than you can whip up for a dessert. It is popularly known as Goreng Pisang in the Asian countries like Singapore and Thailand that is essentially made from ripe bananas dipped in a rice flour and coconut batter, then deep fried to make it crisp.

The fried bananas are one of my favourite desserts, but I hardly make them at home as I tend to avoid cooking too many deep fried dishes. When Philips sent me the Philips Air Fryer the first thing that came to my mind is to try the Crispy Fried Bananas. And the result was super delicious! Perfect crust and soft bananas inside.

London to Vilnius: my rail odyssey to the Baltics

As the construction of a high-speed line ushers in a new era for travel between Poland and Estonia, our writer takes the slow train and explores cities that are new to him

Think of those great train experiences, the classic iron-road odysseys that fill your heart with joy. Forget, for a moment, that these days the Orient Express doesn’t actually go to the orient and that the Flying Scotsman might involve a bus replacement service. Modern rail travel can still have magic. When I hear that a new high-speed line is being built to connect Warsaw with Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, I know what I want to do. I want to go from London to the Baltic states by rail before it gets all sleek and swanky (the line is due to open in 2028). I want the whiff of Soviet times, a bit of what the Germans call Ostalgie. And having recently done London to Marrakech on the train, I know that there is no rush, and that there is extra joy to be had in well-chosen stopovers. I grab a map.

In the past couple of years, Europe has been experiencing a boom in new rail services, partly driven by environmental regulation, but also consumer demand for flight-free options. France, for example, has banned short domestic flights where a train journey of under two and half hours is available. New night sleepers connect Amsterdam with Austria, and Paris to Berlin. Stockholm is directly linked to Hamburg and Berlin, making London accessible inside 24 hours.

From a sauna to an ice bath in Scotland: my full immersion in hot and cold therapy

A peaceful woodland estate in Aberdeenshire now offers wellbeing breaks with adrenaline-boosting Nordic-style treatments

I’m sitting in a bright orange tin bath deep in the woods in rural Aberdeenshire. The water is a chilly 8C and I’m being guided through breathing exercises by the UK’s first female commando. This is not a military drill or some kind of cult initiation, but an activity offered at the new Discovery and Adventure Centre at Glen Dye estate, to which I’ve willingly signed up.

“Tell yourself it’s cold, but you can do this,” says Pip Delamere-Wright, “Remember top-down thinking, you’re in control. Just keep breathing.” At first the cold water feels like needles against my skin and deep breathing is required to stay in the water, but I do eventually manage to calm my mind. After the required two minutes I sprint across the forest floor back into the sauna, pine needles sticking to the soles of my feet, awaiting my next summons to the baths.

Contrast bathing, or the Nordic cycle, involves moving between a sauna and icy cold water and it’s surprisingly good for you. The peaceful 6,000-hectare (15,000-acre) Glen Dye estate, with its beautiful woodland and meandering river, is the perfect place to try it, and Pip is a patient and gently encouraging coach. As sauna culture spreads across the UK, Glen Dye may just be ahead of the curve in offering experiences like this.

To the end of the Amazon in Brazil: ‘there are forms of life here that I never knew existed’

On the final leg of his Amazon adventure, our writer arrives in Brazil, where he looks at efforts to revive tribal cultures and to protect wildlife in the world’s most fascinating environmental battleground
Part 1: The alternative Inca Trail
Part 2: Exploring Lake Titicaca
Part 3: The Peruvian Amazon

The boatman drops me on a small wooden landing stage next to what I assume is the riverbank. “They’ll be here soon,” he says. “The lodge is up a creek and my boat can’t get there.” When he has gone, I clamber up on the bank and discover that I’m actually on an island. Orioles are perched on swaying stems of tall grass; a hawk and an osprey are watching for fish. Despite the drought-induced low water, the Amazon stretches far away to a distant shore and the smooth surface is occasionally split by a river dolphin rising for air. I have a moment of pure exhilaration. I am alone in the centre of the Amazon basin, unsure if I’m in Peru, Colombia or Brazil, but feeling that I’ve escaped such mundane concerns.

From the shimmering heat downstream a canoe appears, carrying two men. One sits upfront, a battered straw hat pulled down low over a wispy grey beard and round horn-rimmed spectacles. He looks like an intellectual who has spent a lifetime living in the remotest places on Earth. And that, as it turns out, is precisely what he is.

A high-wire family adventure in the Swiss Alps

Farmers once used a cable car network to move between mountains in Switzerland’s Engelberg region. Now tourists can use them to follow a new hiking trail

There was definitely a goat in our bedroom. As the wind rattled the wooden shutters above the mattresses on the floor, where my partner and I and our two-year-old lay huddled, I woke with a start, searching the darkness for the creature whose bleats had interrupted my sleep.

We were in the centre of Switzerland, in the mountains above Engelberg, staying in a barn at Alp Oberfeld. Or – technically – above one, in a converted section of the upper floor, beneath which the 100 goats the Käslin family tend over summer are milked twice a day. I checked the clock on my phone. It was 6am. They were right on schedule.

A local’s guide to Victoria’s Surf Coast: ‘Everyone has some relationship with the ocean’

The wild stretch from Torquay to Lorne blends long coastal walks and ocean plunges with quality food and culture that rivals nearby Melbourne, says author Gill Hutchison

I moved to the Surf Coast (Torquay to Lorne along the Great Ocean Road) in 2013. It’s the traditional home of the Wadawurrung, Gulidjan and the Gadubanud nations. Being Victorian and close to Melbourne (Torquay lies 100km south-west of the city) we’re all a bit snobby when it comes to food and coffee but it’s unbelievable how much it’s improved. There wouldn’t have been much to recommend 10 years ago!

‘We constantly think about food’: a chef’s tour of Tunis

A local cookbook author guides our writer around the Tunisian capital, from patisseries and upmarket restaurants to the true belly of the city’s food scene

The sun is bouncing off whitewashed houses in the bohemian Tunis seaside suburb of La Marsa. It’s Friday lunchtime and I am waiting for Malek Labidi at a smart cafe called Boulevard des Capucines. The rush is building, everyone scurrying around clutching paper-wrapped sandwiches packed full of meat, eggs and fiery harissa. These transportable meals are sold out of hole-in-the-wall establishments and eaten on the go – a practical option in a city where people are so often in a rush.

When Malek arrives, she is greeted by practically everyone in the cafe. A Tunisian chef who trained at the Institut Paul Bocuse in Paris and cut her teeth with Alain Ducasse before returning home, Malek recently released her first cook book, La Table du Nord. Focused on preserving the culinary culture of north Tunisia, it has been lauded for putting the country’s food scene on the map. (It’s available in French only, but see here for a taste of her recipes.) This is particularly important given the tourist drought that hit after the 2011 revolution and the wave of terrorist attacks in the following years. Visitors have started to return though, arriving on ferries from Marseille and Palermo. As we walk down towards the sea, I catch occasional glimpses of flashy cameras and sunburnt limbs – both silent promises to the local economy.
