If you are running low on tomatoes, then this recipes comes handy. It calls for onions and very little tomatoes. You can skip tomatoes and make this with only onions alone. This curry has no spice powders except turmeric powder alone.
Adding coconut + fennel seeds paste in this curry adds a little creaminess and thickness to the curry, This curry taste well with roti or phulkas.

If you have leftover phulka or roti, make this seyal phulka
Few tips for you
1)Saute the onions till soft, this adds nice sweetness to your curry.
2)If you don’t have tomatoes, skip tomatoes. Instead add little lemon juice in the end.
3)You can add very little roasted gram dal or cashews or any nuts along with coconut when grinding. This adds thickness to the curry.
4)This curry can be served with chapati, roti, paratha or phulka.
5)You can serve with appam or idiyappam.
Variations:
- Addition of carrots, beans or any vegetables.
- Grind coconut with roasted gram dal or little cashews for richness.
- Add whole spices in oil before adding onions.

- Onion - 3 large sliced
- Green Chillies - 4 to 5
- Oil - 3 tblsp
- Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tblsp
- Tomato - 2 chopped finely
- Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Coconut - ½ cup grated
- Fennel seeds / Saunf / Sombu - 1 tsp
- Grind coconut and fennel seeds to a smooth paste.
- Heat oil in a kadai. Add in onions and saute till it gets soft.
- Add in chillies and turmeric powder along with salt. Saute them for few mins.
- Add in ginger garlic paste and mix well.
- Add tomatoes and cook that till mushy.
- Add in coconut masala and mix well. Simmer for 2 mins.
- Serve with roti or rice.
