East Coast Commune is the newest addition to our East Coast Plan, which is strategically located right at the 3500 square metre Marine Cove along East Coast Park where most of the F&Bs are.
With both indoors and alfresco dining areas, East Coast Commune features an interior that reflects the natural landscape at East Coast.
Walls are painted in teal to represent the surround greenery, marine-themed artwork to represent the sea and potted plants on every table to symbolise the diverse floral in the vicinity. The back wall features is commissioned work by local artist Wu Yanrong.
There is a space for everyone, from comfy sofa seats for an afternoon tea break to sturdy wooden and rattan chairs for work meetings and study groups.
The tall trees placed indoors give off a chill and relax vibe, yet you are able to enjoy the air conditioner while eating and working there.
The menu features a selection of Sourdough Sandwiches such Chicken, Fish and Vegan ($9), Granola Bowl ($8), Pan Fried Barramundi/ Roasted Soy Chicken Rice Bowl ($13), Pasta ($14 – $16) and Sourdough Waffles ($8 – $15).
The Sourdough Waffles caught my attention, especially when it comes in both Sweet ($8 – $12) and Savoury ($14 – $15) options.
3 different sweet Sourdough Waffles are available, namely Classic ($8) with maple butter and maple syrup, Berries & Mint ($12) and Nutty Banana ($12) with Ice cream (Single scoop $3/ Double scoops $5) for add-on.
The sourdough waffle had a texture that is on the soft and chewy side.
It was also slightly thinner than usual and has a denser texture with a distinctive sourness that was different from buttermilk counterparts that we are more familiar with.
Using a mixture of strawberry, blueberry and raspberry for the berry compote, topped with whipped cream and mint jelly for a more refreshing taste, the overall leaned towards a citrusy side with sour punch.
Perhaps a little too much.
I would expect a better balance instead of just being sour as the combination of sour berry compote with sourdough waffle could be pretty overwhelming at times.
Instead of serving sourdough as a toast, sourdough waffle is used for their savoury dishes too with options such as Big Breakfast ($14). Fried Chicken ($14) and Four Cheeses ($15).
As their name implies, the Four Cheeses Waffle ($15) includes 4 different types of cheeses: Mozzarella, Parmesan, Gorgonzola and Cheddar drizzled on rosemary caramelised shallot waffle with a dash of pesto and confit tomato by the side.
The first bite tasted like Taiwanese Scallion Pancakes “cong you bing”, with a distinctive shallot scent complemented well by the herbaceous taste from the rosemary.
I will say that the Four Cheeses Waffle may not be suitable for everyone as the addition of Gorgonzola which is a blue cheese has an acquired smell and taste that not all will appreciate.
Using a 3-beans-blend (Brazil, Columbia, Papua New Guinea) from Allpress Espresso for their espresso-based drinks, think Espresso ($3.50), Long Black/ Piccolo ($4), Cappuccino/ Flat White/ Latte ($5), Mocha ($5.50), Affogato ($7).
There are also reasonably priced non-espresso drinks on the menu such as Hojicha Latte ($5), Matcha Latte ($5) and Oat Masala Chai ($5).
My cup of Hojicha Latte ($5) was decent with a light fragrance, smooth and non-powder and I liked it that it’s not too sweet.
Taking considerations that East Coast is one of the destinations where families will bring their kids for a day out, East Coast Commune offers a Kid’s Menu that includes Oatmeal ($6), Petit Fusilli Pasta ($6), Soup fo the Day ($6), Caesar salad ($9) and Bagels & Dips ($9).
Perhaps East Coast Commune is still in their early stage of operations and requires some tweaking to their recipe to make it more refined, their place is worth visiting for some #OOTD moments if you ever ran out of places in Singapore.
