Characters-themed cafe are not uncommon in Singapore, with a Rilakkuma Café at Orchard Central, and temporary pop-ups such as the new Jurassic World Cafe.
This Jurassic World Café located at the Level 56 of ION Orchard, from now till 3 January 2021 (This was in Japan during 2018 during Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s launch by the way, which does feel eternity away.)
Similar to their Japanese counterparts, the Jurassic World Singapore is a pop-up concept under “THE GUEST Cafe&Diner”, a theme cafe operated by PARCO in Japan.
This is done in collaboration with 1-Group who operates 1-Altitude, 1-Host, ALT Cafe & Bar, Alimate, Bee’s Knees, Botanico, Monti, Pixies, The Summerhouse and Wildseed Cafe & Bar.
If you recall, this is not the first collaboration with PARCO in Japan under “THE GUEST Cafe&Diner” concept, which include both the Pokemon Cafe and Minions Cafe some years back.
Time travel millions of years back into the Jurassic World by stepping into the lift located at Level 4 of ION Orchard with direct access to ION Sky at Level 55 that is previously occupied by defunct Salt Grill & Sky Bar.
The lift is entirely decorated by Jurassic World theme wallpaper designed to look like a forest, with deep lush greenery (in retrospect, this is probably the coolest thematic feature.)
The Jurassic World Cafe is divided into 2 areas with retail and dining sections, the former selling merchandise that ranges from figurines to keychains and LEGO sets.
I am not sure if this is a good sign that I was more interested in the surrounding city view at level 56 than the interior.
Can be a little disappointing compared to many characters cafe I had visited.
There was only one life-sized dinosaur (Velociraptor) at the entrance (which many will queue to take photos with), few potted plants and wallpapers on the pillars, and ordinary looking tables and chairs.
Technically a Jurassic World with only ONE dinosaur. (There are 22 at East Coast’s Changi Jurassic Mile.)
The special menu has 4 Mains ($20 – $28), 1 Sides ($14), 4 Desserts ($12 – $16) and 10 Drinks ($6.50 – $9).
Can be a wasted opportunity, as this is one of the few Character Cafes without a targeted kids’ meal as well.
So, presenting the 4 main dishes: Jurassic World Burger ($28), Volcano Curry ($23), Nasi Lemak ($20) and Christmas Meat Platter ($25). Not sure if it is enough for those with dinosaur appetites.
My favourite was the Volcano Curry ($23) that came with pulled pork drizzled with curry sauce with a mini scoop of charcoal rice served on its side.
The pulled pork was tender whereas the curry sauce has a spicy kick – which may not be appreciated by kid diners.
The Jurassic World Burger ($28) came in the form of a Wagyu beef patty sandwiched between 2 charcoal buns, with bacon, cheese, cucumber and purple cabbage with potato wedges served on its side.
Even though the Wagyu beef patty was moist and tender, it lacked a certain firmness, and tasted quite unseasoned.
The potato wedges was the saving grace, deep-fried to a golden-brown crisp with moist texture.
4 desserts are available on their menu, namely Fossil Excavation Cake ($16), Geologic Parfait ($16), Lava Cookies ($12) and Lava Flow ($16).
The Fossil Excavation Cake ($16) is worth a mention, with a layer of moist and light sponge cake topped with vanilla and white chocolate mousse, and generous amount of Oreo crumbles.
The Hot drinks such as Latte ($6), Cappuccino ($6), Mocha ($6.50), Matcha Latte ($6.50) appeared to be cuter as they were served with a layer of rice paper imprinted with dinosaurs on the milk froth compared to their Iced counterparts which only have a simple dinosaur sticker on them.
If you are into minty drinks, you can consider the Mosasaurus Soda ($8) that comes in 2 distinctive coloured layers topped with pineapples and blueberries, which unfortunately tasted somewhat like toothpaste.
Perhaps this is a pop-up so less is spent on the décor, but I did feel there could have been a more immersive and roar-some character theme cafe experience.
