One of the activities I missed most during Circuit Breaker was to gather with friends to eat mookata. Now that we are in Phase 2, we can enjoy a hearty mookata meal (but don’t forget to keep to a group of five)! If you find yourself in the heartlands of Geylang, pay this no-frills mookata eatery located in the same coffeeshop as Kwan Inn Vegetarian a visit.
Opened from 4pm to 11pm, Soi 81 Mookata offers all the fixings you’d expect from regular mookata joints as well as Tom Yam Mama – all at affordable prices. They offer a variety of seafood, marinated meats, and vegetables.
I am always excited to go for the marinated meats. Imagine the juices from the meat trickling down to flavour the broth. Doesn’t that just sound wonderful! Soi 81 has marinated chicken thigh, black pepper chicken thigh, signature pork collage, marinated pork belly, smoked duck and even truffle luncheon meat! I like that the meats are sliced into huge chunks which are great for grilling but I wish they were marinated longer for better flavours.
They do have a lot of seafood options such as Japanese scallop, fresh tiger prawn, salmon slice, abalone slice, squid, cuttlefish, grouper slice and more. Can’t get enough of cheese? You can get the rather unconventional Cheese Dip ($3) that’ll pair perfectly with the grilled meats in your mookata. You can also change to tom yum soup base by topping up $3.50.
If you are as lazy as me, go for the platters which are priced at $25 for 2 pax, $35 for 3 pax and $45 for 4 pax.
For a coffeeshop stall, Soi 18 Mookata is really quite impressive! Besides mookata, they also serve Thai Style salads and tom yum mama. Select from Spicy Vermicelli Salad, Spicy Seafood Salad, Spicy Golden Mushroom Salad, Top Shell Salad and more. Prices start from $8.
If you do have some stomach space, I recommend you order a pot of Tom Yum Mama to share. We went for the Tom Yum Mama Prawn ($26.90) which was thick and rich, with just the right amount of heat! It was quite addictive and had a hint of tanginess, which whetted our appetites for more. The dish came with a variety of ingredients such as prawns, squid, minced pork ball, scallops, and was finished off with two eggs. Even though it’s just instant noodles, they were still tasty as they soaked up all the spicy goodness. They even have Tom Yum Mama Lobster ($49.90). But remember to call and order in advance!
