This year marks 30 years of the ASICS GEL-LYTE III sneaker. The OG running shoe if you will, and we hope to see another 30 years of this one. To celebrate, ASICS has partnered with 30 local and emerging artists across Southeast Asia to put their own unique spin on the iconic GEL-LYTE III.
Using the sneaker as their ‘blank canvas’, each artist created an iteration of the classic sneaker with their various artistic disciplines. At a time when artists are seen as ‘non-essential’ and budgets are being slashed for the sake of cutting cost, ASICS proudly champion the next generation of creatives.
Roy Lan, Regional Marketing Communications Manager at ASICS, said, “By supporting the region’s emerging artists, designers and creative innovators and giving them a unique platform of expression, ASICS is proud to assert itself as a cultural leader, bringing together a community of like-minded individuals with a shared passion”.
From our local arts scene, we have batik designer Yeomama Batik with this gorgeous batik ASICS GEL-LYTE III pair.
As well as this paddle pop dream of a sneaker from muralist duo Ripple Root. Aren’t you just fawning over this pair—it looks like something straight out of Harajuku.
Not forgetting Shasha Soet’s elegant and hypnotising inverse mandalas, a design her clients often request for their henna drawings.
If ASICS ever made any one of these designs, I would purchase them in heartbeat. You can check out the rest of the brilliant iterations of the GEL-LYTE III here. It is indeed heartening to know that we have such a vibrant and flourishing crop of artists right here in our backyard.
In conjunction with the celebration, ASICS is also releasing a new green and purple colourway of the GEL-LYTE III which will retail at S$159 in selected Limited Edt stores. Since we’ve all taken up running now, another pair couldn’t hurt, right?
