‘Majestic brightness’: Warsaw’s Museum of Modern Art finds a new permanent home

After decades of nomadic existence, the Polish capital’s art temple is open for permanent business in an inspirational, light-filled new building

When Poland joined the European Union 20 years ago, our world changed. I was a student in Warsaw, and spent my savings on a train ticket to Berlin – not for migrant work, but to see the 200 masterpieces at the Neue Nationalgalerie on loan from the New York Museum of Modern Art.

In 2017, ahead of a stint working in Silicon Valley, I rushed to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The very first painting I saw was a personal delight because the artist was a woman, Paulina Ołowska, and Polish.

My rail journey to Naples and Pompeii to chase the last rays of sun

A trip from the UK in search of late-season sun leads to fresh discoveries in Pompeii as well bonus trips to Procida and Paestum

When the Mediterranean makes its first appearance, it’s through chilly sheets of rain. I spot the not-very-blue waters between the buildings of Marseille as my train from Paris pulls in. By the time we reach Nice the skies are still grey and I’m starting to wonder how far south I’ll have to go before I get some late-in-the-year sun. Of course, I’m not the first Briton to flee damp, cold drizzle.

Back in the autumn of 1820 a sickly John Keats took the same decision. In his case, however, the situation was more critical. His heartfelt line in Ode to a Nightingale, “O for a beaker full of the warm South”, written the previous year, had an edge of desperation. My own goal is Pompeii. That should be far enough, I reckon, to guarantee a warm sun. Not only that, but I have been drawn by recent stories of new discoveries at the ancient site. How much, I wonder, is that stalwart of the tourist circuit changing? An out-of-season visit seems like a good opportunity to see one of the world’s tourist honey pots without the crowds, and feel the sun on my face.

Veechu Parotta Or Ceylon Parotta Recipe

Veechu Parotta Recipe is a very famous bread in Sri Lanka. The bread/parotta is mainly made from maida or all purpose flour but in this recipe we have used a combination of maid and whole wheat flour to make it healthier. It is kneaded to a very soft and sticky dough which is then rolled and pressed using your hand to form a thin dough that is then folded to create many air pockets.

By folding the parotta you will develop a soft and flaky texture to the bread. The bread is then cooked on a griddle on a low to medium flame till it is toasted well and evenly cooked.

Serve the Veechu Parotta Recipe along with Sri Lankan Egg Curry or a Sri Lankan Chicken Curry to enjoy the dish for your Sunday lunch.

Exploring the Silk Roads: 10 stunning sites in 10 countries from Turkey to China

There are extraordinary places to see and adventures to be had along the strands of the ancient Asian trade route
On the Silk Roads in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan

Whether or not the term Silk Roads is a myth or a handy catch-all for a dauntingly wide geographical network spanning mountain chains, deserts, cities and seas, the idea of it still entices travellers. There are countless extraordinary places to explore along its various strands from Asia to Europe, and these 10 choices represent only a handful of highlights.

There were as many Silk Road threads passing through war-torn lands centuries ago as there are today. Some of these destinations are currently off the traveller’s map for ethical or safety reasons, but given their historical importance it would be wrong to leave them off the list.

On the Silk Roads: adventure and historical riches in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan

A new British Museum exhibition gives a taste of the rich cultures along these ancient routes, but a trip to central Asia offers much more – stunning architecture, moreish food and wild trekking

A small mountainous jewel of a country wedged between Afghanistan and China, Tajikistan has changed since I first visited it as a backpacker in 2009. Back then, landing in the diminutive capital, Dushanbe, at 3am, a permit for trekking and letter of invitation in hand, I was met by a virtually deserted airport and a city lit by few electric lights. Nowadays, you can get a visa on arrival, and everything in Dushanbe is louder, brighter and faster.

Countless construction sites disrupt the capital and there has been much misjudged demolition of old theatres, teahouses and cinemas built during the Soviet era, causing (some) outrage. But it is hard to be too down on the city’s central artery, Rudaki Avenue. Partly canopied by mature trees, and with statues, fountains and parks, it remains one of the most handsome streets in central Asia, appearing as a lovers’ lane of sorts, filled with strolling couples. The thoroughfare also hints at the country’s identity.

Awadhi Style Taheri Recipe - Vegetable Rice Pulao Recipe

Awadhi Style Taheri Recipe (Vegetable Rice Pulao Recipe) is a traditional mixed rice with assorted vegetables that are locally available. The slight variation in this rice preparation is by adding curd to the gravy in order to give it a more authentic Awadhi touch to the whole dish.

The actual cooking technique used for making Taheri is by cooking it in a “Dum”. “Dum Phukt” is a slow cooking process associated more with Awadh cuisine, it is made in a sealed container and cooked at a very slow flame.

Serve the Awadhi Style Taheri Recipe (Vegetable Rice Pulao Recipe) along with Cucumber Raita for a delicious lunch meal.

‘I stood on the sunny hilltop imagining I was a Roman’: readers’ favourite ancient sites in Europe

Celtic coins in Jersey, vast Neolithic structures in Spain and France, and a Roman bath or two feature in our tipsters’ picks from antiquity and beyond

Feeling the need for some brief respite from the crowds and snaking queues in Florence, an afternoon visit to the Etruscan hilltop town of Fiesole fit the bill. The settlement can be found within the archaeological area and could date back as far as the ninth century BC. The Romans conquered it in 283BC. I stood on the sunny hilltop, imagining that I was a Roman, spying my enemies approaching. There is far more to see in Fiesole than first appears – including a Roman theatre, Roman and Etruscan artefacts and the remains of Roman baths. This fascinating town is definitely worth a visit, to feel immersed in ancient history.

Really going Dutch: why I chose The Hague and Delft over Amsterdam

Canals, architecture, art, an enviable cycling culture … There are lots of reasons to take a city break in the Netherlands, without needing to set foot in the overtouristed ‘other’ capital

We leave the Amsterdam-bound Eurostar at Rotterdam, just 3½ hours from London, and swap platforms for a 23-minute ride to The Hague. The “city of peace and justice” (who wouldn’t love that?) is home to the Dutch parliament – in the 13th-century gothic Binnenhof – two of the royal family’s three residences, and the international court of justice, housed in the neo-Renaissance Peace Palace. What’s more, several of the Netherlands’ most famous paintings are in the Mauritshuis, the best-known of The Hague’s many art galleries.

It feels as if there can be barely anything left over for Amsterdam, but The Hague has a further asset that for many would trump the rest: miles of wide sandy beach 15 minutes away by (of course) bike, at Scheveningen.

Tapas not tantrums: we put food at the centre of our Barcelona family holiday

On a rail trip to Spain from the UK via Paris, our writer discovers a great way of travelling happily with children …

Street lights strobed through the window, sending shadows sweeping across our faces as our train followed the River Seine through Choisy-le-Roi. Ten minutes earlier, we had pulled out of Paris’s Gare d’Austerlitz. Departing at 9.40pm, the Intercité de Nuit was due on the Spanish border just after 10am, where we would connect to a Barcelona train.

It’s possible to make the journey from London in a day, but my husband and I had added a stopover to give our two daughters – aged six and four – a whistlestop tour of the French capital, an indulgent lunch and a night on a sleeper train. Travelling with children was once a stop-start nightmare of whingeing for snacks, but instead of fighting them, I’d learned to embrace it by turning each journey into a voyage of gastronomic discovery.

Rail to the Reef: an easy train journey to one of the greatest natural wonders

A sleeper train with ‘thoughtful touches’ along the Queensland coast offers diverse and diver-friendly access points to the Great Barrier Reef

Stretching from south-east Queensland to the tip of Cape York, the Great Barrier Reef is by far the largest reef system in the world. It’s made up of 3,000 individual reefs, crosses the sea country of more than 70 traditional owner groups and, according to the Reef Authority, covers the same area as 70 million football fields. In recent years, these figures have been joined by a host of less welcome statistics, including the hottest ocean temperatures in 400 years and increasingly frequent mass coral bleaching.

Seeing the reef in person brings all of these numbers to life. While rising sea temperatures are an existential threat to many corals, the sheer size of the reef means there are considerable variations in the scale of the bleaching, as well as underwater topography, water temperature and marine life. And yet, most tourists base themselves in a single port and see only a tiny fraction of this diversity.

Spanish steppes: an epic hike across the wild plains of Extremadura

The Via de la Plata is one of Spain’s toughest pilgrim routes, weaving through a landscape of isolated steppes and fortress cities in the country’s least-known region

Scorching sunlight glinted through the windows as the bartender slid a frosted glass of Cruzcampo across the aluminium bar. “Ocho meses de invierno, cuatro de infierno,” he sighed with a nod towards the heat-shimmering lane outside. “Eight months of winter, four months of hell” is how the inhabitants of Extremadura describe their climate.

Your timing needs to be good if you’re planning a hike through the isolated steppes and forested hills that seem to form a barrier – a barely inhabited no man’s land – between Madrid and the Portuguese border. Spring bursts briefly here – a rainbow-coloured wedge of wildflowers driven between winter and summer.

Voulez-vous parler avec moi? My midlife French exchange in Paris

Language exchange holidays are wasted on the young. I had a great time with my host – sans youthful embarrassment about my accent – and more adults are doing the same

On the terrace of a brasserie on Rue Cler, a chic Parisian market street, I’m chatting over a tongue-lubricating glass of Sancerre with Sébastien de Lavalette, 33, a French travel company head and my language exchange partner.

Sébastien compliments my French accent, or at least I think he does: “You don’t have that mouth-full-of-bread accent that many British people have”, as I order in my middle-of-the-road restaurant French. Sébastien, who was raised in Paris but whose family hails from Périgord, reminisces about his teenage foreign language exchanges in Spain.

I’m visually impaired but thanks to my guides I loved exploring Austria’s Tirol

A trip that pairs partially sighted people with fully sighted guides offers reassurance while expanding the possibilities of travel, as our writer discovered in Austria and Germany

Swimming through the cool clear lake, I’m aware of the densely forested mountains behind us, with pale rocky peaks to our right. A cable car snakes up the side of one, and the sky is turning grey, hinting at an Alpine storm. A standup paddleboarder with blond hair who is wearing bright Hawaiian shorts glides past, and the distant shore that we’re heading towards is clustered with cheery red parasols.

I can’t really see much of this. I can see the silhouette of the mountains cradling us, the figure of the paddleboarder but not his twist of blond hair, and the cable car would otherwise be a mystery to me. But as I swim alongside a fellow traveller, Sophia, she describes the scene around us in such detail that it fills in the blanks and paints a rich picture for me as a visually impaired person.

Island-hopping in Croatia: adrift in the Šibenik archipelago

Framed by sparkling blue sea and deep green pines, the less visited Adriatic islands of Zlarin and Prvić offer a mellow end of summer escape

This tale of two islands – and a city – was not the usual Croatian island-hopping experience, say, from Split to Hvar and Brač. I set out to enjoy a quieter, more laid-back alternative farther north, where the overlooked city of Šibenik is the jumping-off point to a very different side of the Adriatic.

First there’s Šibenik itself, which is still relatively devoid of the crowds you see in Croatia’s other coastal cities. Here you naturally gravitate towards the magnificent Unesco-listed St James Cathedral before checking out the cafe terraces on the Riva waterfront and the bars beside the fishing boats moored further up the quayside. Medieval St Michael’s Fortress and its 17th-century Venetian neighbours, St John’s and Barone, loom over the city, the latter two built to protect against Ottoman attacks. They have all been transformed into important cultural institutions – St Michael’s into an amphitheatre for concerts, St John’s an educational centre and cafe and Barone an open-air cinema with augmented-reality displays. Views of the city became even more impressive the higher I climbed to each fortress.

Vincent van Gogh’s Arles: visiting the pretty Provençal city that inspired his greatest masterpieces

The scenes of some of the paintings currently on show in London’s National Gallery can still be found in the southern French city

The market at Arles in France every Saturday stretches for more than 2km, the lush countryside around yielding enough produce to fill more than 400 stalls to overflowing. Alongside the plump fruit and vegetables, drifts of cheese and butter paint the whole scene a deep cream, echoing the Provençal city’s warm limestone and light yellow plaster.

Vincent van Gogh was drawn to yellow, which radiates from many of his best-known and best-loved paintings. The Yellow House was his home outside the city’s ramparts when he moved from Paris to Arles in 1888, hoping (and failing) to start an artists’ colony. It was a studio only in the summer, then furnished for living in the autumn. A new park nearby that he dubbed Poet’s Garden inspired pictures that burst with colourful and abundant growth.

A local’s guide to Frankston: ‘It’s popping off right now’

With contemporary pubs and scenic beaches, local artist and musician Brendan Huntley says there’s a ‘colourful energy’ to the Mornington Peninsula suburb

I live in Eltham, Melbourne now but I kept my sculpture studio in Frankston. Frankston is about 50 minutes south of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, on land traditionally owned by the Boonwurrung people.

The town centre isn’t cute; it’s not like, “Oh, look at those beautiful old buildings.” It’s at the end of the metro line so there’s characters coming in from everywhere and it has a colourful energy. I love it for all those reasons. And it’s popping off right now; there are so many cool new places.
