Sea swims, sensational Scandinavian food - and the odd disagreement: Interrailing with my 75-year-old mum

Taking the train from Manchester to Oslo led to 10 action-packed days me and my Zumba-going mum would never forget

My mum had just one stipulation when it came to our mother-and-daughter holiday: she didn’t want to do any of the planning. She would not lift a finger – payback, perhaps, for my tricky teenage years, which saw me ruin one Pyrenean road trip by vomiting on every hairpin. I tried to claim it was food poisoning rather than the result of a night of underage drinking with the campsite bad lads. Mum, who had seen a lot in her career as an NHS psychiatrist in Morecambe, was having none of it.

I suggested taking her Interrailing after she said she was envious of a solo rail trip I’d taken a few years ago. Dad tried to muscle in, but we rebuffed him: three is a bad number for a holiday and I might have regressed to childhood if outnumbered.

In the footsteps of DH Lawrence: across the Alps from Germany to Italy

More than a century on, the route from Konstanz to Como across lakes and Swiss mountains must also contend with traffic, but it still inspires a novel

‘When I went from Constance, it was on a small steamer down the Rhine to Schaffhausen.” So wrote DH Lawrence in 1913. While his lover Frieda Weekley (née von Richthofen) was trying to explain their love affair to her family in Germany, Lawrence decided to walk south across the Alps, to Como and Milan, about 230 miles, taking steamers on the rivers and lakes where possible.

In 2022, I followed him with half an idea for a novel. I took the train to Konstanz and found a pretty little town of stone courtyards and half-timbered houses. But at once my reenactment ran into a hitch: Trockenheit, said the sign on the lakeshore – drought. It was August, the Rhine was unusually low, the steamers couldn’t reach Schaffhausen, only Stein am Rhein. Half the distance.

Austrian town gets its lederhosen in a twist over modern art

Bad Ischl is the first alpine town to be awarded European capital of culture status, bringing nudity and surreal sculptures to a rural area more in tune with classical music and mountain pursuits

I’m walking through the town of Bad Aussee, in Austria’s alpine Salzkammergut region, where I’m expecting a vision of depravity to emerge through the drizzle. The artists Wolfgang Müllegger and Georg Holzmann gleefully tell me how their big pink sculpture, which was recently placed in the town’s cafe-flanked park, caused shock among locals. Many want it removed, they explain, as we arrive at the artwork. It’s a rather pleasant pastel-pink wooden piece that could depict a pig in a mildly psychedelic kids’ TV show.

I say that the sculpture is completely inoffensive. “It’s just ‘different’,” says Georg, wearing a hoodie and yellow waterproof dungarees, like a hipster fisher. He points to a traditional stone statue of a historic figure in the park. “This is what they’re used to.”

Karwar Style Ambade Udid Methi Recipe - Hog Plum Curry

Karwar Style Ambade Udid Methi Recipe (Hog Plum Curry) is a vegetarian curry from the Karwari Goud Saraswat Brahmin cuisine. Karwar, which is a city in Karnataka lies at the mouth of the river Kali. Coconut, Jaggery, Coriander Seeds and Red Dry Chillies form the base of most of the gravy dishes in the Karwari GSB cuisine. One such gravy made commonly in all homes there is udid methi which can be made using raw mangoes too instead of Ambade.

This sour fruit Ambade (Tulu & Konkani) is called Hog plum in English, and Pulicha kaal in Tamil. It can be commonly found in South India as it needs humid and tropical climate to grow. This recipe has been passed down to my mom by her mom. Forwarding it to you all just the way my grandma used to cook it, but with a tiny twist added to it, with addition of bitter gourd to the gravy to make it even more healthier and apt for persons with diabetic conditions as well.

Serve Karwar Style Ambade Udid Methi Recipe (Hog Plum Curry) along with Steamed Rice and Sol Kadhi for a South Indian meal.

Leaving the herd behind on a family trip in the peaceful southern French Alps

Rugged scenery, an insight into shepherds’ culture, delicious food and remote mountain stays make for a memorable few days hiking in France

High above the Champsaur Valley, in the southern French Alps, the plateau is shrouded in cream-coloured froth. But it’s not clouds I’m surrounded by; it’s sheep. Transhumance – the driving of animals from winter valleys to high summer pastures – is still practised here, and thousands of animals are swirling around me as I stand with the shepherd who will care for them, alone, for the next four months. The size of the flock is dizzying. I step backwards, to steady myself. And hit a wall. Because I’m not really in the high pastures. I’m at Cinémathèque, a slick new museum of mountain film in the town of Gap, and I’m trying out a virtual reality (VR) headset.

Quieter and more traditional than their northern counterparts, the southern French Alps stretch from Grenoble to Provence. Cinémathèque offers a hi-tech introduction to the region’s deep-rooted mountain culture, but the low-fi version beckons. Practising our own, condensed, form of transhumance my family and I are following a tailor-made itinerary with local outdoor specialist Undiscovered Mountains, spending a couple of nights at La Grange des Écrins, a guesthouse in the valley, then head higher to two mountain refuges.

Fjords and seaweed safaris: a new cycle trail along Denmark’s east coast

A cycling holiday on the Jutland peninsula’s ‘Fjordmino’ is a gentle procession of quiet roads, ferry rides, cute B&Bs and islands

When I heard about Denmark’s “island of wild rabbits”, I knew I had to check it out. And the isle of Endelave did not disappoint. Rabbits in fields, rabbits in gardens, rabbits on the road, rabbits emerging from wild rose bushes – everywhere my companion and I looked played out like one of the happier scenes from Watership Down, before all the trouble starts.

“So there are thousands of them here?” I asked Birgit, our guide to Endelave’s Kanino, the island’s new 13-mile coast walk (kanin being Danish for rabbit).

Tackling the wild Rhône on a bikerafting adventure in France

You never get bored on a trip that switches from cycling along country lanes to paddling down rivers – and takes in picnic stops and wine-tasting, too

Travelling on two wheels is terrific: you cover more ground than on foot, but go slowly enough to take it all in. I’ve had a great time on cycle rides from London to Amsterdam, and Bordeaux to Bilbao. But, dare I say it, after a while cycling can get a bit … samey. Proper long-distance cyclists will no doubt disagree, but I find that my neck starts to ache, my padded shorts aren’t cushioned enough, and sooner or later I’d quite like to stop pedalling and do something else.

Enter bikerafting. On a recent trip to the Savoie Mont Blanc region of the French Alps, a group of us set off from the Shana hotel in Chanaz, a picturesque canalside village, by bike.

Walking the Netherlands’ new long-distance Salt Path

A new hiking route in the far north of the country is helping to connect visitors with rural communities and giving churches a new lease of life as B&Bs and art studios

At 5am, the toll of the church bell reverberates through the darkness, jolting me awake – again. The unwavering sentinel in the rural Dutch village of Eastrum has rung every half hour throughout the night. Lying on a camp bed in the nave of the 16th-century Saint Nicholas church, I begin to wonder what I’ve agreed to. But then, gazing upwards, I notice a glimmer – soft tendrils of early morning light sneak through the windows, illuminating thin gold lines painted along the edges of the church roof beams. In the stripped-back simplicity of the building’s Protestant design, the subtle glimmers feel like a heavenly wonder.

I’m in Eastrum to walk a segment of Het Ziltepad, or the Salt Path, a recently opened long-distance hiking trail that traverses the salt marshes of the sparsely populated northern Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen. Tracing the Wadden Sea coastline, the route invites hikers to explore local churches as a way to discover the region’s cultural heritage. If that sounds a little pious, fear not: ecclesiastical enthusiasm isn’t required. Rather, the project aims to breathe new life into the old buildings and encourage visitors to get chatting with local communities.

Youthful yet early rising, Launceston has a great mix of nature, food culture and even a colony of monkeys, says Will Horan, head brewer and founder of Du Cane Brewing

Launceston is on the traditional lands of the Palawa people. Locals all spell the town’s abbreviated name “Launnie”. You get to know everyone really quickly here; it’s such a great size. So many people I meet didn’t grow up here, so there’s a sense they chose it. They’re committed.

‘There are empty sands even in high season’: readers’ favourite island breaks in Europe

Small islands turn simple pleasures into lasting memories. Our tipsters enjoy tavernas, beaches, footpaths and sealife from Rum to Andros

Andros, just a two-hour ferry ride from Athens, is inexplicably missed by most foreign tourists. Greener than the other Cyclades, it’s a walker’s paradise, with well-marked trails spanning the isle, and leading from hilltop monasteries through fertile valleys to hidden beaches. Base yourself in the sleepy main town, also called Andros, which can be reached from the ferry terminal by local bus. For those not inclined to exertion, there are beaches either side of town, and Explore Andros on the main street can organise guided visits to local waterfalls, a vineyard and botanic gardens.

How an ebike gave me the legs to tackle Switzerland’s contours

A new 240-mile cycle route from Lucerne includes spectacular alpine views and pastoral backcountry – with delicious local cheese and wine

With relatively few cars and roads as smooth as a Federer serve, Switzerland seems engineered for a low-carbon cycling holiday. Indeed, the Swiss government has launched a number of new cycle routes in recent years – including cycle route 1291.

Named after Switzerland’s founding year, route 1291 wraps around the heart of old Switzerland: the three founding cantons of Unterwalden (now Obwalden and Nidwalden), Uri, and Schwyz, as well as Lucerne. Starting and ending in the city of Lucerne, it runs through picturesque countryside for 240 miles. Sounds dreamy, but there’s just one problem: those mountains.

In search of Monet’s wild landscapes: a glorious art adventure in central France

Rouen, Paris and London are more well-known Monet destinations, but rural La Creuse’s rugged gorges, spectacular lake and medieval castle really captivated the artist

As my train inched its way into the station at La Souterraine, some three hours south of Paris on a blisteringly hot June afternoon, the woman in the seat next to me asked: “Vous descendez ici?” Her expression seemed to say “Really? You’re getting off here?

I could see what she meant. Behind the wire fencing lining the platform lay a handful of industrial buildings alongside nondescript looking farmland.

A greener Spanish city break: electric boats, birds and rice fields in Valencia

Traffic-free central squares, a huge urban park and a protected nature reserve reachable by bike all add up to make Valencia this year’s European Green Capital

The temperature gauge flashes 34C when I arrive in Valencia. It’s mid-June in Spain’s third-largest city, and the streets are humming with people and cars. I feel my body tense as I wait in a crowd to cross an enormous road, ambulance sirens ringing around me and neon shop signs flashing.

I’m not a city person. I spent my early 20s studying in central London, and ever since, the thought of a city break makes me shudder. I prefer the open spaces of the mountains, or the cool breeze and empty beaches of a quiet coastal town. But when I heard that Valencia, the capital of the region I grew up in, was named European Green Capital 2024, I was intrigued. Could a densely populated city – synonymous in my mind with concrete, fumes and noise – ever be green? I took the bus from my home town, 80 miles south of Valencia, to find out.

Think Andalucía is parched and dusty? Not where I’m cycling

Unlike some parts of Spain’s southernmost region, the Sierra de Aracena hills are green, leafy and peaceful – perfect for an e-biking holiday

The wild flowers are as high as my knees as I cycle through olive groves in the rolling hills of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche natural park in south-west Spain. I follow paths shaded by oak canopies, whiz across streams, weave along cobbled lanes in sleepy villages and stop often to gawp at the views. There are steep, gnarly ascents at times, but I just flick the ebike control to turbo and fly up the eucalyptus-lined slopes.

This is Andalucía, but not as I know it. The sparsely populated pocket in westernmost Huelva province, close to the Portuguese border, has its own microclimate and feels different from the busier, more arid east. The topography means Atlantic winds bring more rain to the area, greening the valleys and meadows. It’s late spring and the lush landscape is spattered with multicoloured blooms, while summers are cooler and more verdant than elsewhere in the region, and autumn is a bewitching time of russet hues and plentiful mushrooms and chestnuts to harvest.

Luarca, a summertime secret on Spain’s cooler northern costa

Spanish holidays needn’t mean battling crowded beaches and blistering heat. In this small fishing village, flanked by green hills and some of the nicest beaches in Asturias, the pace of life is slow even in summer

Spain’s love-hate relationship with tourism reaches boiling point on its costas each summer. It’s scorching, the beaches are packed and the mood can be frantic. Tourists from Spain and abroad flock to the seaside to relax, but can soon resort to mild aggression when it comes to scoring a decent spot on the beach or a parking space. Workers suffer through long, sweaty shifts and struggle to find decent accommodation in many hotspots during peak season.

Meanwhile, in cities such as Barcelona, locals spray water guns at lunching visitors while chanting “Tourists go home!” Even on Spain’s rainier, less visited north coast, grumpy locals are often heard moaning about the madrileños who come north to escape the summer heat. But the Spanish coast still holds some secrets, even in the middle of summer: places where tourists can unwind without any hassle and locals seem genuinely happy to host them. One such place is Luarca, a small fishing village in Asturias.

From the playas to the plains of Spain: readers’ tips

Our tipsters revel in whitewashed villages, mountain vistas, regional food and medieval architecture

Carved into the rugged coast of Asturias, Cudillero is a picturesque fishing village that lit up our recent tour of the north. After driving along the coast from Gijón, we were instantly struck by its vibrant colours. We enjoyed the freshest of seafood at one of the quaint harbourside restaurants, and found the arroz con bogavante spectacular yet inexpensive. We spent the rest of the day wandering through the village’s narrow, winding streets and after its seemingly endless staircases to unveil a panoramic view of the harbour.

‘It’s nice to help a life to live’: meet Sri Lanka’s turtle guardians

Volunteers are helping save baby sea turtles as the endangered species’ favourite nesting spots come under pressure from development, poaching and tourists

  • Photographs by Thilina Kaluthotage

It’s a sweltering night on the western coast of Sri Lanka, and on Mount Lavinia beach there’s an unusual flurry of activity. Several young people in orange hi-vis vests are squatting in a circle, digging in the sand in the semi-darkness.

The team of volunteers is patrolling a popular tourist beach on the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, scouting for turtle nesting sites. Finding the nests can involve a bit of detective work.

Kids on board: a family surfing trip to France’s wild Atlantic coast

With vast empty beaches, reliable waves and pine forests, the Gironde, near Bordeaux, is perfect for an exhilarating but relaxing holiday

On a sloping patch of sandy beach, the sun low but still warm and bright in the sky, my husband and I sit watching our sons playing in the waves. There are few other people around as they spin and jump, dive under the crests and try to bodysurf. Mostly they just wrestle each other in the bubbling foam.

The eldest is 13, so inevitably he and his 11-year-old brother play together less than they did, but they’re never as happy a double act as when they’re messing about in the ocean. Especially when the waves are punchy and powerful, as they are today in Montalivet, a small resort in the Gironde department, also known by its full name Vendays-Montalivet, on France’s Atlantic coast.

Saunas, sledding and empty shores: Guardian Australia staff’s favourite east coast winter breaks

Whether you plan on embracing the cold or warming your bones, these well-tested winter holiday spots lean into the best of the season

Take the plunge in Sydney’s ocean pools
It’s a truth universally unacknowledged that in winter, the ocean temperature in Sydney is often warmer than the air (and certainly warmer than the inside of our poorly insulated homes). So when the days turn crisp and the tourists dissipate, I like to squeeze into my swimming wetsuit and neoprene bathing cap, pop in my earplugs (to stave off surfer’s ear) and slide into one of the city’s 30 or so ocean pools, which extend from Palm beach in the north to Cronulla in the south.

Twin border towns reunited in Italy and Slovenia for capital of culture

Gorizia was split down the middle in 1947 between Italy and Slovenia. Next year the two towns will come together again as European capital of culture

The sunny terrace of Mama Angela wine bar is the perfect spot from which to appreciate the splendour of Gorizia’s Piazza della Vittoria. My train from Venice took more than two hours to chug its way here, and I now find it hard to believe I am still in Italy. I’m sipping a delicious Slovene orange wine, other customers are mostly chatting in local dialect and Slovenian, and across the square are a glorious baroque church, a monumental Neptune fountain and romantic pastel palaces, all dating from when this was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

But the glory days of Victory Square are long gone. For the moment, Gorizia is one of those rare hidden gems that is simply not on the radar of most tourists, or even most Italians. At the end of the second world war, the city was unceremoniously split between post-Mussolini Italy and communist Yugoslavia. A brutal metal barrier, topped with barbed wire and patrolled by armed soldiers, separated homes and families, as happened in Berlin, but this town’s fate had little attention from the world’s media. All that is set to change.

Exploring the quieter side of the Cyclades on a Greek island hopping holiday

The party island of Mykonos steals the spotlight, but a short ferry ride away, tranquil Tinos and Delos offer ancient history, holy sites and rugged beauty

A woman crawls, slowly – very slowly – along the pavement. She’s wearing kneepads. Before her walks her husband, carrying a red candle as tall as himself. On the main steps to the church of Panagia Evangelistria, we pass two more people proceeding on hands and knees. But this is not a surprise: we are on the island of Tinos, outside one of the holiest sites in Greece. If we’d come in August, there’d have been many more pilgrims crawling uphill, over 800m, all the way from the island’s main port, in sweltering heat.

The church they’re inching towards is a neoclassical marble beauty with wedding-cake decorations of blue and red. Inside, black-cloaked priests chant in candlelight and clouds of incense. Even for the irreligious, it’s a moving experience to see pilgrims, many of them now in tears, queueing to kiss the holy icon, said to have been discovered after a local nun had a vision from the Virgin Mary.

Discovering Calabria in Italy, where tourists are seen as a blessing, not a curse

It has sandy beaches, hilltop towns and emerald seas to make fans of Italy swoon, yet this southernmost region remains an undiscovered gem

Let’s start with an exclusive: “Italian town wants more tourists and cruise passengers.” It’s true that many in Italy are fed up with the country’s 22 million annual visitors, and that its most celebrated city has banned cruise liners and makes tourists pay a daily tax, but in deepest Calabria, as in several other areas, overtourism is not an issue – rather the opposite.

The main piazza in Santa Severina, a few miles from the Ionian coast, is dotted with bars and cafes beneath the walls of a Norman fortress and the dome of a Byzantine church. There’s a small formal garden leading to a terrace with wonderful views – we are more than 300 metres (980ft) high – over the Sila mountain range.

From the Dolomites to Sicily: readers’ favourite unsung places in Italy

Spa towns, perfect seaside haunts, brilliant food and art, and spectacular walks feature on our tour of lesser-known Italy, courtesy of our readers

The Tuscia area of northern Lazio, within easy reach of Rome, is a quiet oasis of history and geography: from the papal palace in Viterbo, follow winding roads through rolling green hills of oak forests and hazelnut orchards to the stone monsters of Bomarzo park, prehistoric cave homes in the nearby gorges and the high art of Caprarola town. But my favourite place is Civita di Bagnoregio, a fortress town on a volcanic plug, with views to distant crater lakes.
