This Thai eatery reminds me of how Nakhon Kitchen was like, with a similar type of no-fuss décor and presentation, variety of dishes and price-point. (Also read: 10 Thai Restaurants In Singapore With Islandwide Delivery)
Although 87 Just Thai is located at faraway Pasir Panjang (at least for me), it has become one of my favourite places for inexpensive Thai dishes in a restaurant.
I was buying furniture opposite (Danovel Furniture) and boss told me that this was where he liked to dabao from.
The eatery was unassuming (one of those you will walk past places), reminded me of a Thai zi char place, but I think it have what it takes to be popular with Singaporeans.
Somehow, the kitchen team managed to get most of their dishes right, and were not too bad in service recovery.
If you are wondering what to order, Chef Specials include Deep-Fried Century Egg with Hot Basil ($8 – $12), Thai-Style Braised Pork Knuckle ($10), Sea Bass with Thai Spicy Lime Sauce ($25), Stir-Fried Long Beans with Salted Egg with Chicken ($8), and Claypot Tang Hoon with Prawns ($12).
They also further recommended their lesser-ordered Stir-Fried Squid with Yellow Curry Powder ($10) and Red Curry with pork, beef or prawns ($8) – though Green Curry ($8) is the dish most Singaporeans go for.
While you would occasionally see the dish of Pad Kra Pow Century Eggs in Thailand, this is less commonly found in Singapore.
The deep-fried century egg pieces give that added pieces of crispy outer layer with creamier centre for texture variety, and the entire dish is best to go with steamed hot rice.
In terms of spice level, I would give it a 7 out of 10 (Singaporean not Thai meter), enough to drop a satisfying kick, but you won’t break out in sweat.
Tom Yum Prawn Soup at $6?
This is indeed good value, and I liked that the Tom Yum Goong ‘captured’ that sourness with a punch, and wasn’t’ too watery because nothing is worse than diluted Tom Yum. (Oh yah, I added Maggie Noodles during one of visits, it is not officially on the menu.)
(Sorry, I actually didn’t shoot a pic for the Green Curry.)
My default order for almost every Thai restaurant is a Green Curry with Chicken ($8). I personally enjoy the beef version, though not everyone manages to not overcook the beef.
I wished that the gravy was a nod creamier and thicker, but it was overall deliciously-spicy, aromatic, sweet and savoury, matched with tender chicken pieces.
Not too shabby in terms of portion as well.
Just a note, as 87 Just Thai recently got ‘rediscovered’, so delivery during peak hours like dinner may take a long while. Be patient or avoid those timings.
