Our favourite McDonald’s may have finally returned to us after a brief hiatus, but some things money still can’t buy. Yes, I’m talking about the seasonal and very much beloved Prosperity Burger from McDonald’s.
It only comes around once a year near Chinese New Year, but I’m sure most of us will agree that it’s one of the best seasonal menu items from McDonald’s. Well, to save us the heartache of pining for the Prosperity Burger, here’s a little recipe you can try.
That’s right, it’s a recipe for DIY McDonald’s Prosperity Burger, in just 30 minutes!

Step 1: Add 2 tablespoons of diced onions to the minced meat. Mix well.
Step 2: Mould minced meat into long patties, and let them rest in the fridge. As you’re moulding the patties, be sure to compress them enough that they’ll hold their shape.
Step 3: Spread some butter on the bread and pan-fry them. Try to get a good char on the buns without burning them.
Step 4: In a pan, heat up 2 tablespoons of butter on medium-low heat.
Step 5: Add in wheat flour then mix until they turn golden-brown.
Step 6: Add in the remainder of diced onion, black pepper, oyster sauce, and water as needed until it has a thick consistency. Use low heat, so that the moisture doesn’t boil off too quickly.
Step 7: Fry patties with some cooking oil. Be sure to let the bottom cook through before flipping the patty, to prevent the patty from falling apart.
Step 8: One by one, dip the patties into the sauce and sandwich them in between 2 pieces of bread. Add on some sliced onions.
If the patties are a little fragile, I’d recommend using a spoon to spread the sauce on the patties, instead of dipping them. I have to say, this burger is really heavy on the onions, so if you’re not a huge fan, you might not be that enthused about taking a bite.
While the sliced onions are added raw like how McDonald’s does it, feel free to grill the onions very lightly if that’s your preference. Personally, I find the sharp, pungent bite from raw sliced onions provides an additional dimension to the burger.
The sauce was surprisingly close to McDonald’s rendition, albeit a tad saltier and thicker in consistency. I’d recommend adding more water to the sauce as you’re simmering it, and to keep the heat as low as possible.
For all you McDonald’s fans out there, this is one recipe you simply have to try. Once you master it, you won’t have to wait agonisingly for the Prosperity Burger—just make your own.
Try it out, and let us know if there’s anything you’d change about the recipe!
