Gully: Greek Spinach Pie & Other International Street Food Delivered From Dempsey

We love sharing good food recommendations with you, but for now, keep these recommendations as bookmarks—visit them only when the COVID-19 situation ends. Stay safe!

As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on and as we spend more time at home during this ‘Circuit Breaker’ period, I’m sure we all miss the carefree days of travelling to different countries.

For me, one of the things I miss about travelling is the food. There’s just nothing like munching on German currywurst from a street stall, or swinging by the Taiwanese night market to pick up Taiwanese fried chicken buns. Or what about hurrying into a warm English pub and tucking into a hearty plate of fish & chips?

If you’re missing street food and international cuisine like me, you’ll be happy to know that I’ve found an all-new F&B concept that delivers street food to your doorstep.

Gully Dempsey Singapore 1

Created by three childhood friends who share a love of food and travel, Gully serves up street food from different cultures. This eatery on Dempsey Road collaborated with the executive chef from Blu Kouzina and curated a menu to showcase street-inspired food from countries around the world.

From 23 April 2020, Gully is now available for delivery (through WhatsApp at +65 8485 0820 and on Deliveroo) and takeaway.

If you’re within a 6km radius from their kitchen at Dempsey Road, orders above S$60 get free delivery while orders under S$60 will have a delivery fee of S$5. For those who are outside the 6km range, there’ll be a delivery fee of S$8 – S$15 depending on your location.

To get an idea of what Gully offers, I tried some of the items available on the delivery menu.

Whet your appetite with the Pav Bhaji (S$12), a popular fast food dish from India. This thick vegetable curry is usually served with bread rolls, and it’s essentially a spiced vegetable mash.

Gully’s Pav Bhaji comes with chopped tomato masala, mashed veggies, fresh chopped onions and pav bhaji spices, all tossed with extra virgin olive oil. Drizzle some lemon juice over the dish for a hit of zest, and dig in.

Greek cuisine isn’t that commonly found in Singapore (though if you’re looking for classic Hellenic dishes you can swing by Zorba The Greek Tavern). I’ve always wanted to visit Greece, so what better way to spend my ‘Circuit Breaker’ period, than to sample some of their street food dishes?

The Greek Fries With Pulled Beef & Organic Sunny Side Up Egg (S$25.50) may sound like a side dish, but it’s hearty enough to function as a main.

Homemade oven-baked potato fries come topped with an organic egg done in the sunny-side-up style, with Greek braised pulled-beef in tomato sauce served on the side. Unfortunately, due to the delivery process and the amount of time I spent taking photos, the fries ended up a little soggy. I popped the fries in the air fryer to crisp them up a little before eating.

Greek fries is traditionally served with Greek seasoning, olive oil and lots of feta cheese. Gully’s rendition kicks the flavour up a notch, with pulled beef and a lovely jammy sunny-side-up egg.

The pulled beef was adequately tender, which added textural contrast to the dish. While the portion was generous enough, I actually found it too filling to finish the entire portion on my own. Best to share it, and save some tummy space for the rest of the dishes.

Speaking of sharing, I’m sure the German Currywurst (S$14.50) is meant for sharing too, but it’s one of those dishes I’d like to keep for myself.

Sliced neatly into bite-sized portions, juicy German sausages are drizzled in Gully’s secret curry ketchup sauce. It also comes with a side of fries or rice, in case you’d like some carbs to fill up your belly. I’d suggest getting it with fries for the most authentic experience.

Currywurst is a common fast food dish from Germany, and it’s seasoned with curry ketchup, a sauce consisting of ready-made ketchup seasoned with curry and other spices.

Here at Gully, it’s a pretty faithful rendition of this street food that I first encountered at a German Christmas market. Bursting at the seams, the sausages were taut and juicy, which meant that each bite was full of succulent flavour.

The dish that I particularly liked from Gully was the Greek Spinach Pie (S$16). Also known as ‘Spanakopita’, this traditional Greek layered pie is a savoury pastry which comes with spinach and feta cheese filling. Greeks have actually been eating these pies since ancient times!

I absolutely adored how flaky the pastry was—though it did make things a little messy. Together with the rich, tangy and slightly salty feta cheese, the leafy spinach made for a lovely filling for this pastry.

Again, I’d recommend sharing this dish because of how rich and creamy the feta cheese is, which tends to fill you up pretty fast. (But if you can polish it off on your own, go for it!)

Gully offers even more dishes that you can try, ranging from Asian street food—Chinese, Indian, Taiwanese, Indonesian and more—to Mediterranean and Greek, to European. Since we won’t be able to travel for the foreseeable future, why not let your tastebuds take a trip around the world with the international street food from Gully?

Expected Damage: S$20 – S$40 per pax
