Stupid question about Som Tum Isaan

Just ordered Isaan-style papaya salad for the first time from my local Thai place. I don't eat much seafood so I'm a bit new to all of this. What do I do with the salted crab? It's been lightly pounded in the mortar so the shell is still on all of the pieces and there seems to be little/no meat. Am I supposed to crack the pieces open to get at the little slivers of meat? Or am I supposed to eat around the crab because it's just there to flavor the rest of the dish slightly?
