Hot or hype? Famous Popeyes Chicken Sandwich comes to town & available till 14 Oct

It’s here; we’ve been all abuzz about it—the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich that has gripped millions in the United States, and seems to be now gripping us here in Singapore after it launched on 16 September 2020.

The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich (S$6.90 a la carteboasts a buttermilk-battered chicken thigh after 12 hours of marination before it is fried to crunchiness. The chicken is sandwiched in a pillowy brioche bun after being slathered by the trademark buttery topping that we see on the signature Popeyes Biscuits (S$6.90 for four pieces).

So, is it worth the hype, or is it just another craze inflated by the bandwagon? To know if it’s just the bandwagon, you have to jump on the bandwagon.

The packaging looked promising, for sure. Check out that bright orange exterior that noisily proclaims its newness and promises how much you’re going to love that chicken. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.

Popeyes 3

The bun sure looked soft and appetising. I was a little disappointed that the sauce wasn’t very visible, being all concentrated on one side of the burger. In hindsight, I suppose a fried chicken thigh drenched in spicy mayo (or whatever their secret sauce is made of) would sog down some of the crunch.

That said, it was a busy day, and my poor Chicken Sandwich had to wait a bit before I could give it some attention after it arrived at my door. That’s probably why the chicken wasn’t as crunchy as they promised to be, but that’s on me.

The chicken itself, I have to say, was nicely tender, and the pickles added a very welcome crunch that the chicken could not give. I particularly enjoyed the whole sandwich with chilli sauce slathered on to drown out the spicy mayo, as it got a little too mustardy for my liking.

Popeyes 2

Here’s the verdict—I enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t get in a fight over it. I think that the sandwich is objectively tasty, but we might have been too generous with our ardour.

Regardless, we all know our knee-jerk reaction to something that’s only available for a limited time, don’t we?
