Fish Sambar Recipe

Fish, Drumsticks, Raw Mangoes cooked in a Spicy Coconut Sauce which is seasoned heavily with Sambar Powder. Fish Sambar taste amazing with plain rice.

You know that we love fish curries. I have made so many version of fish curries in my blog and this is one of the best. This taste super spicy and delicious. The tangy and spiciness of the curry goes well with plain steamed rice. This recipe is going to be a crowd pleaser at dinner parties at home.

This is a traditional Fish Curry recipe. Another great recipe which i got inspiration from my husband. He mentioned about a curry which he had few years back which has sambar powder added in it. Immediately i tried it and it was delicious.

How to get rid of fish smell from fish?

1)Mix salt and turmeric in fish and leave to marinate for 10 mins. Rinse it well.

2)Apply vinegar or lemon juice over fish and wash it well.

3)Apply, salt, turmeric, lemon juice over fish and marinate for 10 mins. Now wash it well.

4)Soak it in milk: Casein, a protein found in milk, will bind to the TMA and leave the fish smelling fresh as ever.

5)Mixture Of Corn Starch, Salt And Powdered Turmeric. Apply this over fish and wash it well.

6)Plain salt water can get rid of the fish smell.

How do you cut a fish for Curry?

A delicious curry could be prepared using the head and the bones. Meanwhile, to clean the mackerels cut off the fins and the bones on the sides first. Slit through the part where the head joins the body and slowly pull the skin off. Remove the gills and pull out the entrails of the fish.

How to Remove fish smell from hands?

Rub Lemon and salt all over your hands for removing fish smell from hands.

Fish pieces cooked in a spicy sauce which has complete aroma of sambar powder. This fish curry goes well with rice, aapam, idiyappam.

Ingredients
  • Fish - 500 grams (any variety)
  • Coconut Oil - 4 tblsp
  • Onion - 1 large sliced thinly
  • Green Chillies - 3 to 4
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 2 tblsp
  • Tomato - 2 large sliced thinly
  • Sambar Powder - 3 to 5 tblsp
  • Tamarind - 1 small lemon size
  • Drumstick - 1
  • Raw Mango - 1
  • Water as needed
  • Coconut - ½ cup ground into a smooth paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry Leaves a handful
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a pan, add in onions and chillies. Cook for 3 to 4 mins.
  2. Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for 1 mins.
  3. Add in tomatoes and cook till mushy.
  4. Add in sambar powder and mix well.
  5. Add in chopped veggies and mix well.
  6. Add in tamarind pulp, water, salt and mix well.
  7. Add coconut paste and fish pieces.
  8. Mix well.
  9. Cover and cook on medium low flame for 10 mins.
  10. Serve with rice.
Notes
1)You can add chopped tomatoes, brinjal for extra taste.
2)Making this fish curry few hours before serving is best. It enhances the taste.
3)If you dont have sambar powder, add a mix of coriander, chilli, cumin and turmeric powder.
4)Use coconut oil for best aroma.
5)Add lots of curry leaves for best aroma.
