We are slowly resuming our normal activities and that includes meeting our friends for makan! One of our latest find is Yuan Zhi Wei at Whampoa Drive Market & Hawker Centre. I have eaten Best Lu Mian in Town at the same hawker centre. Yuan Zhi Wei’s lor mee is recommended by a friend who grew up in this area.
I must say, it didn’t disappoint. We ordered at about 10.45am and managed to get the last four bowls of lor mee. Uncle said we were very lucky, because he is usually sold out by 9.30am. Yes, I think we were really heng. I even got the chance to have a cup of Whampoa Soya Bean.
The standard lor mee ($3) has a bit of everything: a fried wonton, fish fingers, meatball, beansprouts and small chunks of tender stewed pork. Sadly, there was no braised egg. Hence, we bought extra fried wantons, fried fish fingers and meatballs and up our lor Mee game by adding more ingredients!
The three best things about this flavourful bowl of Lor Mee is the gravy, the hot spicy chilli sauce and the yummy breaded fried fish fingers.
The gravy was thick, with a slight herbal taste. It coated the noodles easily and the dish was topped with vinegar, minced garlic and spicy chilli sauce – three must-have lor mee ingredients that amplify the flavours of the gravy. Add the chilli sauce with caution because it is really spicy. But this is the secret ingredient that makes the lor mee stand out.
As for the breaded fried fish fingers, it makes a great snack and add crunch to the dish. To be honest, my vote still goes to Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee because I like my Lor Mee more old-school with shredded fish meat. But I am sure Yuan Zhi Wei’s breaded fish fingers won the hearts of many kids. I enjoy the wantons too but I wish there was more filling.
The stall also sells other noodle dishes($3 each) which also feature the same fried ingredients but without the lor mee gravy and thick yellow noodles. But lor mee is the bestseller so head to the stall early for your breakfast!
