928 Yishun Laksa – $2.80 Old-School Laksa With Long, Long Queue

Yishun may not have the most positive reputation in Singapore, considered ‘dangerous’ because of some reports and news – we know it is over-exaggerated.

But let’s talk about the “928 Yishun Laksa”, which continues attracts people to visit this side of the town

The stall technically has no official name, and is found next to a dessert stall under Block 928 Yishun Central 1.

To find this on Instagram, search for “Yishun 928 – the Very Nice Laksa Stall”.

So, I made my way there during early morning and shocked to find a long line. I knew there would be a queue but not this (and it is not even near the MRT station).

This line would easily make you wait for half an hour or more. Note: if you need to fine in the other coffee shop space, you MUST order something there like a dessert.

One of the main draws is that the Laksa is quite cheap, starting as low as $2.80 per bowl, but you can add more ingredients for just $0.50, while cockles are $1 extra.

The serving size is surprisingly generous for the given price, considering most places are already selling laksa in the $4 to $5 range, with very little ingreidnets.

You can choose the noodles you want, and the ingredients are plentiful from crunchy bean sprouts, fish cakes, boiled egg and taupok (beancurd puffs).

For laksa purists, you may find it weird to have crabsticks added within.

Comparing this with some of the more familiar styles, this gravy was on the light side, and I would imagine some would prefer a richer, with more of that lemak coconut milk flavour.

The thing that stands out the most is their delicious homemade sambal added with dried shrimps, so try the gravy on its own first before mixing that in.

That chilli gives the dish an extra kick of dang and spice, that may cause some to break out in sweat.

There are a few draws to this place: that old-school taste that is getting hard to find, and it departs from the usual Katong styles for those looking for uniqueness.

And $2.80 is really affordable. Where to find?

Best in Yishun, no one will doubt at this moment. But best in Singapore? Debatable.
