Hainan Hokkien Mee – Dry-Style Fried Hokkien Noodles At Golden Mile Food Centre

Hokkien Mee can divide fans – there are supporters of the wet and saucy; while others enjoy the dry and flavourful.

This is the DRY version.

Hainan Hokkien Mee 海南福建炒虾麵 at Golden Mile Food Centre operated by an elderly couple with a 60 plus year old recipe, stands out for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it is cooked fresh in a batch upon order.

Secondly, the method of preparation is different, as the noodles and thin bee hoon are fried along with the stock until they completely absorb the whole flavour.

You would have thought that the noodles may be too mushy, but the form stays – still springy.

There is usually a queue at this stall, so be prepared to wait, say 20 minutes or more? (Sometimes I am lucky.) Oh yah, I read you are also allowed only ONE pair of chopsticks.

The Fried Hokkien Mee ($4) though disappointedly had a small serving size, one of those plates in which you may end up counting the actual prawns and squid given.

So order the $5 for the hungry person, and you would be more satisfied.

What customers enjoy about this plate is that the Hokkien Mee is more or less consistent, with rich taste in every mouthful. Yup, no ‘sauce’ per se.

There is this light smokiness, and mild garlicky taste that is alluring. If you like yours wet-wet, then this is not for you.
