Funny how we crave for cakes, pastries and desserts more when we are stuck at home?
By the team behind Awfully Chocolate, Sinpopo Brand manages to spruce up traditional kueh recipes with modern presentations.
Think Pandan Kaya Cake, Gula Melaka Cake, Pulut Hitam Cake, Dar Dar Mille Crepe and Putu Piring Cake – familiar nostalgic treats of well-loved local flavours made into cake forms.
Sinpopo Brand Restaurant is a familiar restaurant-café located at Katong known for its heritage menu with a twist.
Perhaps not many know there is a revamped “Sinpopo Grocer” at Paragon and Novena Square 2 – which offers pantry essentials from homegrown Singaporean brands; café concept “Sinpopo Coffee” at Funan; and “Sinpopo Bakes” at Takashimaya Food Hall.
Something to look forward to: there is a new range of cakes and pastries (thoughtfully developed during the “Circuit Breaker” period) available for pre-order and in-store purchase at all Sinpopo Brand outlets. Next day islandwide delivery is also available at: https://www.sinpopo.com (FREE delivery with min order of $135.)
New items include Basque Burnt Cheesecake, mouth-watering Tres Leche Cake, Sticky Date Pudding, delectable Lemon Yoghurt Cake, and soon-to-be-launched Matcha Crème Brulee Cake. (Slice cakes available in-store.)
Here’s more:
Pandan Kaya Cake ($48 for 6”, $72 for 8”) (Must-get)
A hybrid of pandan chiffon cake and kaya toast, this handmade gluten-free cake is made of glutinous rice flour.
Inspired by the tiered dessert kueh salat, the cake is tinged with a beautiful natural blue from Blue Pea flowers, often used in Peranakan cuisine.
In between the cake layers is the luscious slow-cooked slow-stirred pandan kaya spread and fresh coconut cream.
What I really like about this cake is that you get a bit of that fluffy chiffon and creamy nostalgic kaya coming together – a blend of two favourite cakes coming together. Best to go with a cup of teh-o kosong.
Gula Melaka Cake ($38 for 6”, $62 for 8”) (Best-seller)
As the brand’s first best seller, the Gula Melaka Cake is Sinpopo Brand’s original creation.
Also portion sizes for the Gula Melaka cake slices (as well as Pandan Kaya, Putu Piring and Pulut Hitam) are approximately 50% bigger as well.
This fluffy, moist three-layered cake was invented to showcase the smoky-caramel aroma of gula melaka.
Infused in between cake layers and in the decadent fudge topping, gula melaka is one versatile ingredient that makes this dairy-free cake a crowd favourite.
Sticky Date Pudding Cake ($48 for 6″, $72 for 8″) (NEW)
We know the classic English dessert that is Sticky Date Pudding, and this is now converted into a cake.
You can almost imagine how this would be like – indulgently decadent, rich and moist.
Fresh Medjool dates are folded into the batter, complete with smoky toffee fudge coating.
Here’s a tip: put a slice in your microwave (for a couple of seconds for this) or oven to get slightly heated, and top with a big fat scoop of ice cream.
Lemon Yoghurt Cake ($72) (NEW)
The “French Grandmother’s” (Gâteaux de Mamie) Lemon Yoghurt Cake which is perfect for a tea-time treat.
The rustic cake is coated in zesty lemon-infused cream cheese frosting, topped with burnt lemon and a touch of thyme.
Tres Leches Cake ($62 for 10″) (NEW)
I don’t often come across this cake in Singapore. With its origins supposedly in Mexico, “Tres Leches” actually means “three milks” in Spanish.
What you get is a sponge cake soaked in a mixture of condensed milk, evaporated milk and cream which results in a soft, slightly wet, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
Sinpopo Brand’s version comes topped with Chantilly cream, and adorned with Himalayan pink salt, fresh blueberries and pistachios for that crunch.
Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($42 for 6”) (NEW)
The current trending cake in Singapore. Burnt yet undercooked, this 500g cheesecake is far from typical with its scorched edges and gooey centre that oozes lazily.
Made with just a few ingredients – cream cheese, eggs, sugar, cream – Sinpopo’s rendition of the Spanish-original is a mix of textural contrasts with its torched crust and light and soft center.
Dar Dar Mille Crepe ($88 for 9”) (Popular)
Get the Dar Dar Mille Crepe and bask in local flavours inspired by the popular Nyonya dessert kueh dadar (a traditional kueh of sweet coconut pancake).
Unlike kueh dadar where a pandan pancake wraps a grated coconut in gula melaka, this rendition slathers grated coconut tossed in palm sugar and fresh gula melaka cream in between thin layers of pandan crepes.
Sinpopo Brand also offers freshly-baked of pies and pastries – Roasted Apple Tart, Sticky Cinnamon Roll, Bretzel, Parmesan Cheese Croissant and Butter Chicken Pie. Just a few of the new baked goods they have rolled out on a daily basis.
Bread and Putter Pudding ($12.90 box of 2; $18.90 box of 3)
With influences from British cuisine, this Bread and Butter Pudding is simply made by baking bread in an egg custard.
What breathes life into it is the brown sugar and cinnamon combo that makes the buns moist and sweet.
Make it even more perfect a la mode with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Comes in boxes of 2 and 3.
Baked Four-Cheese Tart ($25.90 box of 4)
Baked with the cheese lover in mind, this artisanal savoury tart is made with puff pastry.
It is filled with tongue-gliding-smooth custard made from four cheeses.
Soft mascarpone, mildly sharp parmesan, smooth cream cheese, and red cheddar – all blended and baked until beautifully crusted.
Roasted Apple Tart ($25.90 box of 4)
If you enjoy your tarts with fruit fillings, you should love the Roasted Apple Tart.
Prepared with thin slices of roasted red apples meticulously nestled on a frangipane, a rich, velvety almond cream with hints of vanilla.
Together, they are baked in a flaky-light puff pastry to a rustic shade of brown.
Sticky Cinnamon Rolls ($21.90 box of 4; $31.90 box of 6)
Pair your fave brew with these soft fluffy rolls, made sticky with a glaze of brown sugar and cinnamon.
Available in boxes of 4 and 6 pieces, these baked treats are finished off with a silky cream cheese frosting. Actually makes you feel like it is Christmas now.
Singapore’s Best Brands
Sinpopo Grocer (found at Orchard Paragon and Novena Square 2) has relaunched, a concept that sets itself apart from all other grocers with its selection of “Singapore’s Best Brands”.

Also get your hands on Sinpopo Brand’s Salted Egg Yolk Cookies with Curry Leaf ($18 per 130g jar).
