Whenever Singaporeans think of IKEA, the first thing we associate with it has to be the meatballs and chicken wings.
Popular to the point where Singaporeans were waiting in snaking lines prior to the ‘Circuit Breaker’ period, IKEA Singapore holds a fond place in many of our hearts. The only two outlets are in Tampines and Alexandra, which means that Westies like me often have to make a long trek just to get a taste of the meatballs, or to pick up a (self-assembled) wardrobe or desk.
And don’t get me started on the crowds; the Tampines and Alexandra stores see almost 7 million visitors a year, so imagine travelling all the way there just to stand in line for an hour. Not fun.
Luckily, IKEA Singapore will be opening their third outlet in JEM, come 2021. Taking over the space that Robinsons currently occupies—Robinsons will move out by end-August 2020—this will be IKEA’s first-ever small-store concept in Southeast Asia. It’s the first time IKEA is opening a store within a shopping centre in SEA.
Occupying 6,500 square metres, the three-storey JEM outlet won’t have the playground and built-in warehouse that are present in the other two outlets, but it’ll still house the ever-popular IKEA Restaurant. And we know that’s all that matters.
IKEA Singapore stores are still closed during this ‘Circuit Breaker’ period, but I’m definitely looking forward to my first visit to the JEM outlet next year. Who’s with me?
Dates & Times: Opening in 2021
Prices: N.A.
