Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle – Highly-Raved Hokkien Mee At Serangoon North

Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle 小弟炒虾面 is one of those Hokkien Mee stalls that can leave customers divided.

There are a number food blogs and online reviews giving this extremely positive reviews to the extent of “Best Hokkien Mee in Singapore”. Wahh…

There are a couple of ‘hurdles’ a Hokkien Mee fan who is keen to try got to cross though – the distance, the portion, and that you may not expect friendly-friendly service here.

First things first, this stall is not the easiest to get to (not near any MRT station), located at an ulu coffeeshop called “Guan Hock Tiong Eating House 源福中餐室”.

Other than being slightly hard to find, if you have not seen any photos, you may be in a shock of the grey and dull interior.

The short operating hours (11am to 3pm) made it inconvenient for some to find time to travel here. Also, do check their Facebook in case they close unexpectedly.

Many people told me I HAD TO TRY this Hokkien Mee, so I came with slightly higher than high expectations.

In Singapore, Hokkien Mee fans generally fall into two camps – the wet or dry. I don’t think I have a particular favourite, but should gear more towards a wetter version.

The Hokkien Mee ($4, $5) is cooked by a young hawker, and the good thing is you would be given a buzzer so you do not have to stand in line.

While some customers may think the portion is not fantastic, but there were ingredients of fresh prawns from Thailand, cuttlefish slices, strips of tender pork belly and crispy pork lard prepared fresh.

The prawn noodles were gooey and wet, absorbed some of the rich prawn stock, though not to the point when the umami-fairies would descend on the taste-buds. But good stuff.

Perhaps it was because I went relatively early to avoid peak hours, the wok-hei could have been a lot stronger.

Those who are lean to more ”zhong kou wei (prefer more intense flavours) and smokiness (you know, those black char bits) would leave slightly disappointed, but it is a decently-delicious Hokkien Mee at this part of Singapore.
