Founded in 1969 by Mr. Ayyakkannu, Muthu’s Curry is formerly Muthu’s Makan Shop.
In 1982 it began expansion and took on a new name, where ‘Muthu’ literally means “pearl” in Tamil and ‘Curry’ represents the Indian dishes if prepares. It specialises in south Indian cuisine from the Chettinad region known for its fresh seafood, succulent meats and aromatic spices.
Aside from the restaurant in Race Course Road, it has 2 more outlets in Suntec City Mall and Dempsey Road.
The main outlet at Race Course Road is also listed in the Singapore Michelin Guide with a
Bib Gourmand.
Designed in Chettinad architecture, the restaurants will not only please your palate but its opulent interiors are also visually stimulating.
It was the late founder himself who developed the signature Fish Head Curry ($24, $28, $33), cooked the South Indian version way using a secret blend of spices.
The family recipe is now guarded by his sons. Highly recommended, this dish features the catch of the season, with a seasonal choice of Sea Bream, Sea Bass, or Red Snapper.
The fish is fresh, tender and fleshy, while the rich, spicy gravy is flavoured with aromatic spices and a hint of tamarind and mixed with pineapple chunks and juicy okra.
Eventually, the menu included dishes even from North India, from starters and sides to mains, staples, beverages and desserts.
They have 9 in-house set menus and offer a customisable indoor and outdoor buffet.
The open kitchen concept and live tandoor station is also a highlight as this is where their hot naan comes from, as well as tandoori chicken and seafood.
The chef’s special, Paneer Sheekh Kebab ($11), is a must-try, especially if you’re a vegetarian. The paneer (a fresh, unaged, non-melting Indian cheese) is combined with mashed potato and spices and shaped on a skewer, then cooked in the tandoori oven until golden brown.
A good starter or even as snack.
Other chef’s specials are the Dum Biryani Chicken ($12) and Dum Biryani Mutton ($13)
Customers can also look out for the Hyderabadi Dum (goat) Biryani ($16) and Nattu Kozhi (country chicken) Biryani ($14) which are only available on weekends and public holidays.
Both the aromatic lamb and chicken are cooked with use the long-grained Basmati rice prepared using dum method which is slow oven cooking.
The Flower Crab, Masala Prawns and Tandoori Chicken are most often ordered by the diners. Free papadums and two vegetable side dishes are always offered to diners.
